DUNE Disc to Digital - Extended Edition NOT Available

I utilized the Vudu Disc to Digital option on Dune, utilizing my Extended Edition DVD and paying additional for high definition. The copy that was provided was the shorter, inferior cut of the film (which is almost incomprehensible and difficult to follow).

The running time difference is 40 minutes.

If one does "Disc to Digital" for the Lord of the Rings Extended Edition, are we given the shorter theatrical cut? I would certainly hope not.

Meanwhile, I have opened a back-and-forth email session with VUDU regarding this; I have no desire for a "high definition" shortened version of the film. Either a refund (yes, I understand, I should lose that title from my digital list, but so what? The shortened film is so inferior to the 3 hour version) or get the correct version and make it available.

They offered me a credit, but because I redeemed 10 at once, the amount they are offering will not cover an alternative title. I may have to dispute this with my credit card company, as this strikes of fraud when you say you cannot "refund" a credit card when they do not deliver on the actual product for which you were paying.

It is your choice if you would like to dispute the charges. However, I just wanted to give you a heads up, once you submit the request to your bank and we receive the chargeback requests , the account would be suspended pending further investigation. In cases like this, it's always better to work something out with your customer support rep.

If you post your case number, I would be happy to take a look for you.

I didn't think that the extended version are available at VUDU, either through D2D or for purchase.

It's not. While I understand the OP's frustration, he was not lied to or given anything other than what was available. The mistake that was made was yours by not noticing which version of the film is actually available. If Vudu is willing to offer any sort of credit, they are doing everything they currently can to rectify the situation.

There is absolutely no reason to be upset with Vudu. Vudu has never offered an extended version of Dune. The extended version is pretty rare, and I don't think it is in print. DVDs of the extended edition were released at one time, but they are out of print. You did not look into what Vudu offered before you did the disc-to-digital purchase. Any extended versions of Dune have been released without the blessing of David Lynch, because the only version he allows his name to be associated with is the theatrical version.

Re: DUNE Disc to Digital - Extended Edition NOT Available

I agree that the issue of different cuts of the same movie is not handled well by the UV system in general, but I think the idea is to not keep you from obtaining the license for the available version if you own a disc for which version a license is unavailable.

However, most vendors will not give any kind of refund or credit for digital media, as it's too easy to copy or at least watch the content and then demand a refund. I'm not saying that is the case here, I only mention it to explain why refunds are considered differently for digital media. By asking for an "alternate title", you are basically saying that, although you bought the movie on sale, you want the full retail price for it. If you take the credit, you can wait until you have 10 more movies to convert and use it for any one movie then. Trust me, I speak from experience: if you think you're done, you're probably not.

I agree that the fault was yours, not Vudu's; the extended cut is not offered anywhere on Vudu, so the fact that you expected something that was not offered is ridiculous. Although, the extended versions of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy are available and do work perfectly with D2D. And I'm not sure why Vudu owes you more than what you paid??

Reminds me of that website a while back (Woot maybe) where the customer demanded black earbuds with his iPod and was enraged he got white apple earbuds
