Vudu HDX to UHD upgrade possibilities??

So when using the Vudu At Home Disc to Digital service I can upgrade from DVD to HDX for $5 or $2.50 if I upgrade (10) movies or more at a time which is fantastic option.

With the new Vudu UHD offerings that typically run $29.99, I really wish Vudu would begin allowing upgrades from HDX to 4K UHD for $9.99 or even $14.99? I mean I have already invested in the HDX version maybe at $15 to $20 each so it would be wonderful to be able to upgrade current SD, HD, HDX versions to the NEW UHD versions at varying price points. At this point, I really have a hard time justifying spending another $30 on the same movie again. Yea, I know it has a better picture but come on, let us upgrade in the Vudu store for a reasonable fee.

I just might be a little more excited about 4K if I could upgrade. I did purchase a 4K Smart TV late last year but then I found out that it isn't a model that Vudu 4K streaming supports or something like that. So I have a 4K Smart TV that I can't use with the built in Vudu Streaming App to watch UHD movies. Is that still true? If so, that kinda blows that I might need to buy another 4K TV and be more careful about what make and model I choose just to watch Vudu 4K UHD movies on the BUILT IN Vudu Streaming App.

At this point, my 4K Smart TV has been kind of worthless. Yea, we use it for Vudu HDX steaming and all that other stuff like Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. but if I can't stream 4K movies then really what was the point.

I agree with you about wishing Vudu had the upgrade from HDX to UHD. I only have 2 UHD vudu movies and one of them I purchased because I had credits expiring soon. The other I got because the UHD UV disk code automatically gave me the UHD digital version. I'm not planning on purchasing any UHD movies until Vudu (or the studios) decide to reduce the prices. If I'm going to have to pay $30.00 for a UHD movie, I'd rather get the disc which I can watch in HDR on my UHD player. I don't have any devices capable of Dolby Vision so I can't even watch them right now using the best possible video format.

Re: Vudu HDX to UHD upgrade possibilities??

Quite frankly, I wish there was some upgrade process for SD, HD, HDX, period.

Sometimes there are movies that I would like to purchase but they only list an SD version. Now the SD version, for the time being, would be just fine knowing that someday I would be able to upgrade to an HDX version. But without an upgrade process, I feel Vudu does loose potential income.

For instance, right now, I have an SD version of Mars Attacks!! on Vudu. I would like to upgrade that to HDX but the only way to do that is just purchase the HDX version for $13.99.

I do have the DVD but Vudu AH D2D won't recognize the DVD (I get one of those error messages) and usually taking the discs to convert at my local Walmart is a nightmare since 99.9% of the people that work at Walmart don't even know what D2D is or how to do it.

It is just kind of silly and inefficient that I can "maybe" upgrade DVD's (SD) to HDX (when it works) via D2D but I can't upgrade SD to HDX directly in the Vudu store.

Lots of potential lost revenue if you ask me.

This is why I won't even D2D something that is SD only, even for $1. Even if I didn't mind watching it in SD, I would feel like I wasted that dollar if it's ever offered in HDX, because I would definitely want to upgrade.

I believe Sony offers discounted upgrades of some titles to HD and UHD at their website (you have to have a Sony account and connect it to your UV account). It would be much better if Vudu and other studios let you do it too, but I guess this is at least something.

Yep. Only if you redeem the UV code through the Sony website though. $13 to upgrade an HD code and $15 to upgrade a SD code. If you redeem the code anywhere else the upgrade options will not appear. Same if you purchase a movie through any other UV enabled site. It won't give you the upgrade option unless you purchased through sony.

Unfortunately, unless it's for gaming, 4K is a total joke and a corporate scam for consumers. The original poster said it himself; that they spent all of this money getting HDX, now there's 4k.. The content you stream in 4k will use more bandwidth over time, will cost you more in data and internet fees (isp's are already looking into ways to raise your bills), and more electricity is used to run a 4K smart tv, so that bill is going up, too... There's no reason for 4K. It's as much as gimmick as curved, after being told we all need flat screens... I'm happy with 1080p.. Not falling for the corporate 4K hook line in the water.

It's not always true what you say about power consumption on the 4K smart TV. My 1080p DLP TV uses 216 watts and my LCD 4k TV uses 178 watts so it's a lot better as far as power consumption.

UHD is more than "4k" (In fact it's not even true 4k) resolution. UHD also includes rec2020 wide gammut color and supports HDR. Both of those are far larger improvements than 1080p to 4k. Rec2020 is larger than the cinema P3 colorspace standard so if a display has wide gammut support it will actually be the full P3 color from the cinema release not a gamut compressed rec709 home release.

Re: Vudu HDX to UHD upgrade possibilities??

I am a fan of Vudu for its HDX quality and had high hopes for streaming 4K HDR with ATMOS. Over time I have purchased 69 HDX movies & more TV series, but no 4K titles. Since I have overhauled my home entertainment equipment (4K HDR TV, AV Amp, and Samsung 4K Blu-ray) I really want to stream but, my VUDU app installed on my brand new 4K Samsung Blu-ray and 65" Smart SUHD Tv does not support 4K yet....Netflix, Amazon, & Fandango streams 4K HDR (less ATMOS). Yes, my Roku 4 supports the 4K Vudu App but I still am unwilling to pay VUDU high cost for each movie, especially since I've already purchased many of Vudu's 4K titles in HDX quality. Also, even though I have purchased several 4K HDR/ATMOS/DTS-X Blu-ray disk titles direct from Wal-Mart with Ultraviolet copies, they still show up as on Vudu as HDX with Dolby 5.1, NOT 4K ATMOS. But they do offer me the "opportunity" to purchase the same 4K movie title again for $29.95! There seems to be a lack of committment by Vudu to want this business so, I will keep purchasing the Blu-ray disks from the vendor with the best price and forget about streaming on Vudu until they fix their pricing and upgrade their Apps to support 4k on Samsung devices.

This is something the movie studio will need to "fix", not Vudu. If you didn't already know, the movie studios set the prices on their content.
