Can anyone with Vudu confirm whether it will still output RGB, like the PS3? Will it allow downloads?

        Re: PS4?

It's definitely available on the PS4. I downloaded the app last night and played around with it. It says in the PlayStation Store that the movies are 720p quality, but I think that's a typo on Sony's part. The video quality on HDX looked the same as on my Oppo-103. It also says it supports 7.1 Dolby Digital Plus when the app loads. And it runs smoother and faster than even on the Oppo. I didn't try downloading anything. I'll check on that today and update this post.

The one downside is that the PS4 seems to have decoding issues at the moment. In the system settings, you can leave it on PCM which is the default setting, or you can choose to Bitstream in DTS or DD. Sony needs to update the system with firmware so that it Bitstreams properly(in stereo, DD, or DD+ on VUDU for example). I noticed if I went with Bitstream, DD+ 7.1 titles on VUDU only outputted in 5.1. At least that's what my Pioneer receiver indicated on the display.

But it's a brand new system and this was only day one. I'm sure there will be fixes over time. The app itself works great. Although I'll probably stick with my Oppo for now, especially since the PS4 reportedly doesn't support 3D movies right now.

Thanks, downloading is a must for me so Im curious about that. Do you have the PS4 running thru something like an AVR that would allow you to pull up and see if it is sending out ycbcr 444 or RGB 444 for the vudu app when a movie is playing? The PS3 treated apps like games IIRC and everything is RGB, another issue for me.

I'm running it through a Pioneer Elite receiver. I'm not sure if it's sending it out that way. I did check to see if downloading movies was an option and for the life of me, I can't find where it's offered on the PS4 VUDU app. It looks like all you can do on there is stream(for now at least). Which is a shame considering the system comes with over 400GB of free space.

Reportedly the PS4 can decode DTS HD-MA 7.1 for streaming video, so if/when that's added to VUDU(and Sony works out the decoding kinks), the PS4 will surpass even the Oppo 103.

              Re: PS4?

Some times in the AVR menu it will tell you the video signal coming in (1080p/24 ycbcr 444 for example), and then whats going out.

Maybe someone from Vudu can chime in.

                Adam,
Did you use a PS3 previously, if so, how does the noise level of the PS4 compare. For that matter, how does it compare to the Oppo?

I read on another forum that the PS4 was more quiet than the PS3.

It's very quiet. The only time it really makes any noise is when the disc is spinning when it's loading. I never thought the Oppo was all that loud either, so the PS4 is maybe marginally quieter.

Thanks, just curious. The PS3 sounds like a jet about to take off.

PS4 does not currently support downloads - the limit to app download data is too low to support it - hopefully that will change...

The video output colorspace is still determined by the PS4 system settings, so it's not possible for apps to change. Though YCbCr 444 won't really make most PS4 video apps look better (possibly worse?) since the content is all YCbCr 420 and the UI RGB, and probably gets composited (i.e. in 3D hardware, texture mapped by a GPU) in RGB space. Outputting YUV again would just be yet another color conversion. (Honestly, no idea if the PS3/PS4 BD player composites the UI in YUV space so no conversion happens - but it's very possible it doesn't...) Anyway, if your display device handles RGB "correctly" there's nothing wrong with using it (the input gets converted to RGB internally anyway since that's what the pixels use).

As far as audio output (mentioned by Adam_ME) - there were some issues with audio decoding we are trying to work out (better to be out day 1 than wait for firmware updates - notably it's not true bit streaming yet, but it should be supported in an update. (Actually, PS3 bistreaming should be in a future update, as well...) Though we did make sure DD+ 7.1 can be output as LCPM 7.1, so check that... you may have a system setting that's re-encoding to DD 5.1??)

You're right about PCM. If you set the audio decoding in the PS4 to PCM, the VUDU app does output 7.1. I tried Turbo which is DD+ 7.1 and my Pioneer Elite receiver showed all 7 speakers on the display and I checked all 4 rear speakers and each one had sound coming out of it. If however you set the PS4 to Bitstream DD or DTS, then you'll only get 5.1 audio.

So, as long as the peaks are not so loud you need to turn on dynamic range compression (aka. "night mode") you should not notice any difference with 7.1 LPCM Otherwise, it should be available in a future release when you select "bitstream" in the system settings...

Jake, thanks for being available to answer questions. We really appreciate it!

Currently, the PS4 app does not switch the PCM stream to 5.1 and 2.0 depending on content. It is locked to 7.1 all the time. Is that something you might address in a future update?

I would be curious to know the same information for the Xbox One app, as it is also locked to 7.1 (if '7.1 uncompressed' is selected in XBO settings).
