    UHD VIZIO Exclusivity Deal

When does it end? I understand VUDU has to do what it thinks it has to do to make money, but I really want UHD titles and it sucks that I have to wait for this stupid deal to end.

The line goes "We are working to make more TVs compatible", but come on. How stupid do they think we are? ONLY VIZIO TVs can see 4K despite the millions of 4KTVs in homes? That is ridiculous. VUDU didn't have to gradually include different brands of TVs to see HDX, they don't need to include different brands of TVs to see UHD. That's a ridiculous claim.

And NO, I'm not going to buy a ROKU 4 because most 4KTVs, including mine, already has apps on it and ROKU 4 doesn't even support HDR.

Is this coming from an article? Can you share the link? I'm curious to know more about this.

      Re: UHD VIZIO Exclusivity Deal

My issue is that they aren't being up front about the deal. Obviously it's a deal because like I say, it's completely ridiculous that somehow UHD titles only work on one specific brand of TV. So what, they have to upload 20 different encodes to accommodate all the different brands of TVs? That makes no sense.

Clearly it's the same type of deal Panasonic had with Avatar 3D, or Samsung had with Shrek 3D/Monsters vs. Aliens 3D. I believe in all those instances, exclusivity lasted for a year. I'm really hoping that's not the case here because that really ticked a lot of people off.

It's worth noting that all of the UHD titles on VUDU are being prepped for UHD Blu-ray, which will look better (and come with free UV codes). VUDU's only advantage is to get them out faster. They'd better get on that.

Ok, so you're assuming all of this. I don't see this as an issue, I'm sure many more manufacturers will be UHD enabled fairly soon. I don't think Vudu wants to miss the boat with this UHD technology, looks like they are pretty invested in it. It's still too early anyways, not nearly enough UHD titles to make most consumers make the jump to UHD. Patience is a virtue!

Is there really an exclusive deal with Vizio or are you assuming there is?

            Re: UHD VIZIO Exclusivity Deal

I think that he means that though UHD is about to explode, only certain Vizio models can take advantage of viewing UHD movies on Vudu at the present time, so if you have an LG UHD TV, such as myself, then you can certainly purchase them, but not view the UHD version of them, as my model can only view HDX, though as stated, I have an LG UHD TV. There is another streaming service that also is doing the same thing, but only with Samsung UHD TVs instead of Vizio UHD TVs.

Does it stink? Yes, because that's why we bought the UHD TVs--to get a better quality movie. However, it may be that Vizio is willing to test with Vudu where others were not. It may be that it will be available later to other models as an update, so there is patience required if that is the case.

I also have a LG UHD TV and think this is crappy that I can't view the UHD titles. I have been supporting VUDU for years and this is their approach to 4K.

Plus, what about the HDX titles that I have purchased through VUDU that are now offering a UHD version, it seems if I have already paid VUDU $19.99 for Superman in the HDX version, that I should not have to pay full price at $24.99 to see it in the UHD version.

Some concession should be made for customers that have purchased the best format available at the time in VUDU only to have to pay again full price once a better version comes out.

When you go to Best Buy did you say to the clerk I bought this movie on DVD and now you expect me to pay full price for the Blu-ray?

If they are going to give it away do you think the studios will spend the money to upgrade titles if there is no money to be made?

He is basically asking for the option to pay $5 more, to bump to to UHD from HDX, not asking for a freebie.

Instead, VUDU (etc) will get nothing.

                    Re: UHD VIZIO Exclusivity Deal

I am not suggesting that VUDU not make money or a profit. In fact I want them to make a profit so they can stay in business and continue to be that "movie library in the cloud."

However, if I have purchased a movie through VUDU at the HDX level, not a converted DVD or Blu-ray from my collection. I don't think its a stretch to think that they could offer the UHD version to existing HDX owners for the difference in price of HDX vs UHD.

Basically that's the system they have in place now, a lower price for SD, higher for HDX, and highest for UHD. For some reason it just seems punitive to me for them to want the full price for the UHD version when I've already paid the HDX price. Had the UHD version been available I would have opted for that version and gladly paid the full UHD price, well maybe not gladly..... but I would have paid all the same.

Clearly I am an early adopter of this technology, owning a 4K TV now for over a year and embrace formats like VUDU, wanting them to be successful, so just call me na?ve for wanting them to work with us a little bit.

I agree with you especially because the cost of the digital version is probably much less than the cost of the physical version so when they mention the physical version, we're not talking apples to apples.

                      710 HDX
                      2 HD
                      2 SD

Again there really is no precedence for an upgrade charge. It didn't happen for VHS to DVD, DVD to Blu-ray, and for UHD to Blu-ray.

I think all of us would love an upgrade option but they don't even offer it for SD to HDX. Probably not gonna offer it for HDX to UHD.

The upgrade option would most likely be up to the studios anyway.

Chiming in: VUDU UHD is not an VIZIO exclusive.
The technology and content are just subject to myriad issues of standards, licensing, certification and other considerations that we are working to resolve in order to get VUDU UHD onto as many devices as possible. Fortunately 4K and HDR has some great momentum behind it (did you see the awesome TVs at CES?) so hopefully we'll be able to share more news and devices soon!

On VUDU some of my SD movies show a $13.99 upgrade to HDX and most of the UHD show a $24.99 upgrade to UHD. In my opinion overpriced.....

AS far as physical media there was the DVD2BLU program 5 years ago, and the RED2BLU for the HD-DVD to Blue-Ray program.

Are you sure those aren't just the full prices? If not, that's exciting, that discounted upgrades are finally being offered!

Either way, can you tell us what the full prices are for those movies with HDX for $13.99 and UHD for $24.99? (What are the prices when you're logged out of your account, like in a different browser or a private/incognito browsing window?)
