I hope the Vudu guys didn't bite off more than they could chew at CES...

I would bet the naysayers already have their articles written and ready to publish Feb 1 if Vudu doesn't deliver the 1.2 software update and at least 70 HD titles by midnight 1/31/08.

I've been holding off renting movies waiting for the 1.2 release, because why would I watch it in SD if HD was available? Even with the price increase for HD (which I'm hoping will quickly fall due to Apple's announced prices), that's a lot of movies ($400/$5.99 = 67) I'd have to rent before I even get to the cost of just buying a decent BlueRay player. By the time I've watch 60+ movies BlueRay profile 2 players should be a lot cheaper anyway.

          Some comments:

1.) Not all Vudu HD movies will be $5.99. Some are at $3.99l All of iTunes HD movies AFAIK will be $4.99. I think the average will be about the same.

2.) Vudu engineering is working very hard to get Instant HD out to everyone before the end of the month. I can absolutely guarantee you this. I don't think they bit off more than they could chew at CES with this.

I believe Jon is guaranteeing that the Vudu engineers are working very hard to make this happen. I'm willing to put 95% odds on it (instant HD and public access to the new HD library) happening on time.

Yes, Ed. That is correct and I'd put odds at 95% too.

                ...
Actually, HD library (catalog) titles are going to be 3.99:

                http://www.appleinsider.com/articles...e_pricing.html

DVD-quality iTunes Movie Rentals are $2.99 for library titles and $3.99 for new releases, and high definition versions are just one dollar more with library titles at $3.99 and new releases at $4.99. Apple will provide the new Apple TV software free of charge to existing Apple TV owners when it releases the new Apple TV priced at $229 in about two weeks, the company said.

So VUDU HD titles will be $3.99, $4.99, and $5.99?

Hey, maybe if we stop answering your questions, you'll have to buy one to find out!

That falls within what we have seen so far. Nothing to say that it can't move in either direction (up or down), depending upon studio negotiations. Again, I emphasize that I would love to be able to pay $49.99 on opening week to "rent" a movie that is running in the theaters. Combine this with a decling scale (say $39 rentals in week 2, $29 rentals from week 3 forward until it leaves the cinemas), and you would have a solution very appealing to some Vudu owners (not all of course). I would much rather watch the latest Harry Potter or X-Men movie in my home theater, instead of the sticky, smelly, noisy public theater.

Pricing ($3.99/$4.99 for HD, $1 premium over SD prices) is going to be the only advantage that Apple TV will have when it comes to rentals. Although it performs other media extender functions which I'd really like Vudu to have.

On a side note, I am curious to see how much 2nd gen Apple TV will be hacked. Maybe I will pick it up in a few months if things like Xvid/Divx and MKV support will be easy to add. Although, I am leaning towards SageTV HD or Popcorn Hour right now...

It seems to me that if AppleTV can't close down the hackability of their system that they will quickly be cutoff by the content owners.

At the risk of venturing off-topic...

Have you ever considered running XBMC on a modded Xbox? It's amazing what it can do. It can stream almost anything that you throw at it. The only real limitation at this point is that it can't do HD very well at all. But once they complete the port of XBMC to Linux then I don't think there will be anything out there than can come close to it.
