    Do you buy SD movies?

I am wondering how any of you purchase SD movies files?

The Pixar sale offered several great movies in SD for $11.99 each -- or for HDX they cost $5 more for a total of $17.99 a pop.

Although I am an HDX w-h-o-r-e, I cannot justify re-buying the Pixar films in HDX that I already have on blu-ray. But I am seriously thinking about getting some in SD for $11.99 each. I might get:

    Toy Story Trilogy
    Walle
    Up
    Indestructables

I have to decide soon before the Pixar sale ends (if it hasn't already).

Should I get them in SD?

Because I cannot STREAM HDX, and only SD, I purchased the HDX version of Up... and well... SD didn't look to schnazzy =\.

I am happy I own the HDX version so I can download it and watch it in a better quality!

I would say hold off on SD, it didn't look to great on my TV.

I don't buy any Disney movies period, because they refuse to play nice with the rest of the industry and join UV. But I do buy some SD titles if they are less than 8 dollars.

        That's it!

I was weak and I broke down. I got the HDX files of Up and Walle tonight. They are incredible movies. Worth every penny.

Agreed, I own probably at least 15 - 20 Disney Movies on Blu-ray and they are not getting another dime from me until the join UV with the rest of the industry. I would love to then D2D and pick up new titles after they make the move!

Are SD movies files about the same quality as a DVD?
Or are SD files even lower quality than DVD?

SD from all sites I know of are 480p which is what DVD's are.

I'm probably better off with a DVD (eeuueew!) than with an SD movie file. At least DVDs can be upconverted. SD file just are what they are (and cannot be upconverted).

Still, I have the Looney Tunes platinum collection Vol 1 and they are all SD. perhaps because they are cartoons they seem to look fine.

Why can't an SD movie be upconverted? That's all in the hardware's ability. If you have the right hardware, an SD movie could be upconverted. SD movies fill my screen, and I'm not changing zoom settings.

I did not know that a digital file can upconvert. On my blu-ray and DVD player, I see that DVDs do get upconverted. I don't know where (equipment or software wise) an SD file would get upconverted. I don't see any option for it on my 55-inch LG 3D Cinema display.

The movie on a DVD is a digital file. If it can upconvert, so can a streaming file.

                          Hey,

I'm trying to understand what you mean by "upconverted" - but here's my take:

Basically, after SD video on your BD player, for example, is decoded (whether it's from a DVD or streaming movie) it will be converted to whatever resolution you set the BD player to output.

Since DVDs are 480i, that usually means deinterlacing (converting interlaced to progressive) and upscaling (usually to 1080p if your TV supports it). However, higher end players, TVs, etc, usually have better video processors to do a better job at this conversion, so even though all SD is generally "upconverted" to display on an HDTV, it won't necessarily all look the same...

You can't have high definition on a regular DVD and this matters to me because one day I'll own a large display. DVD's are already old technology on its way out. So I'm replacing movies I love on VHS with Blu-ray. I'll only purchase a movie on DVD because it's not available on Blu-ray. Surround sound is a piece of cake for Blu-ray. Also, 3D has matured and is now more natural and shouldn't be a problem for Blu-ray.

There's an old saying, "you get what you pay for". Usually true when it comes to electronic equipment. SD looks pretty good on my HDTV's when played or streamed through my blu ray players! However, HDX is the ticket! It's addicting.

                              Great take Jake.
