I wouldn't. I have one, and in many ways it's nice, but I would not buy one now. They have not added closed captioning to the original Vudu STBs. Even if you don't need CC, that indicates to me that new features may not be supported on legacy hardware. I'd look for streaming STBs with more memory and faster processors. Heck, even the Chromecast can do HDX pretty darn well. Although if you can pick one up cheap, and you're looking at it as an interim solution until a better STB comes out, go for it. Me, I'm still hoping that Vudu will make it to the Amazon FireTV, which is faster and more powerful than the latest Roku.

I'm just looking to be able to download vs streaming some of the time. I only get 3 megs so no HDX here. I do have a PS3 that can download a little though. I just wish the Roku would come out with a higher end box with an HD, these Vudu boxes are going to completely disappear while I keep waiting lol

As far as VUDU STBs, I agree - I wouldn't pay much for one now. Basically it's 2007 hardware - in fact it was released around the same time as the first iPhone - and how many people are still using that? We've tried to keep it up to date with as many features as possible, but it just doesn't have the memory or CPU that more recent devices do (it's 7 years old now!), so it's unlikely it will keep up with all new features...

Most of the Roku units are able to connect to a USB drive, and can play most files directly from that drive. Of course, that doesn't help now, but when the CFF files are available, you should be able to download the files to that USB connected drive, and play them from the USB channel.

I've thought of this as well, however, you have to be aware of the other trade off's.

Max 1TB (as I recall) unless you had it.
Not HDMI 1.4a (or HDMI 2.0) output
3D titles might not work, not sure.
7.1 audio titles might not work, not sure.
You're stuck with the old scroll wheel remote.
Interface may be updated in future to only work with arrow keys and not scroll.
CPU and other hardware are old and slow compared to other streaming hardware.

For me it was just too many trade offs to get local storage. The hardware is really old and dated at this point

Actually, I can't tell about 3D, as I don't have a capable display device, but they are 7.1 capable, and there are IR adapters out there, I have one for each old Vudu STB. (Sorry, I'm not willing to part with them, though.) And if you have an IR remote, you can use all four directional arrows.

The rest are pretty accurate, though. Like I said, it might be an OK interim solution if you it's important to have something that downloads and does offline play of downloaded content, but it's not a long-term solution.
