    Re: Buffering issue

    Buffering rears it's ugly head.

Over the course of the last month, I've developed some annoying issues with buffering, and "Network problems, please try to watch later". My Vudu speed test shows >9 meg. I called Vudu tech support, and they had me run 4 different traceroutes. I think all 4 of them failed at at least one hop. (I have a .txt file, if anyone is interested.) Vudu gave that as a reason to cite AT&T as the culprit, and recommended I call them. If you're standing up, sit down. What AT&T said is a real shocker: "Nothing wrong on our end. It's Vudu's fault." AT&T transferred me to their premium tech support. You know what that means, I have to pay to play! And they don't guarantee a fix. Meanwhile, I'm stuck not able to watch the movie. Now Vudu did give me a credit, but I have 2 more movies on ice to watch. Buffering was never an issue before a month ago. Nothing that I know of has changed. My Blu Ray is still wired directly to the modem/router combination. I had a friend in Maryland run the same 4 traceroutes Vudu had me run. He had no timeouts anywhere. AT&T says because I can surf without issue, it's a problem they won't fix for free. What bugs me is after some of the timeouts, the next hop has att.net in the name. Who is responsible for this problem? Nobody wants to take ownership of it!!!

      Re: Buffering issue

I did run a ping on all 4 of the websites that Vudu asked me to run a tracert on. All 4 of the sites responded, no packets were lost. Response times were quite low, as well. I'm sure AT&T would like to hear that, just as Vudu used the tracert to blame AT&T for the problem. Clearly there is an issue somewhere, but where does the problem lie? Sometimes movies stream just fine, and other times I pull my hair out.

          Jeff,

When you buffer, run a speed test from:

          Speedtest.net
          Speedtest.vudu.com

I'd like to see if there is any difference between the two. The VUDU speedtest is generally a little bit slower for the fact that it's a larger download. Some ISP's provide a speed boost at the beginning of downloads, but after a few seconds will drop back to a normal speed.

I tried to upload screenshots, but it looks like your forum won't allow it. Speedtest showed 11.50 Mbps down and 1.47 Mbps up, with a ping of 45 ms. Vudu showed 11,511 kbps down, and 1,441 kbps up.

I watched an HDX last night, and another one tonight. No buffering issues at all.

I am having the same issues when using my ps3. When running speedtest.vudu.com, 8900 Mbps down and 1200 Mbps up. Just started in the last several weeks.

                    Re: Buffering issue

Seems like every movie I stream now, it'll go for about an hour, and then start buffering, and recommend SD. I'll do a Vudu speed test, and it will peg the meter at 9. Sometimes, I'll get through the movie without further issues. Other times, not so much.

                      Re: Buffering issue

had trouble with a movie buffering every 10 secs., so I sent a message to Vudu. they wanted me to do a speed test and I sent in the result. So far nothing from them. don't have problems with performance from other streaming sites but this one.

wonder if i'm out 5 bucks!

seems like my post didn't show up on this thread.
well, just wanted to say I've had buffering issues with the recent movie purchase. buffered every 5-10 secs. no problems with other streaming sites. sent in an email to vudu and all they wanted was my speed test result. haven't heard from them since!

                          Re: Buffering issue

Continuing the conversation with myself, why is it that I can watch a movie for a half hour or more, and then it buffers incessantly? Run a speed test, and Vudu's own speed test shows a full green bar and recommends HDX. This is very frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                            Re: Buffering issue

So I called Vudu to discuss my issue. Like last time, Vudu blames AT&T, my ISP. And when I called AT&T last time, they blamed Vudu. I'm sure they'll blame Vudu again when I call them tomorrow. It makes me so mad that both Vudu and AT&T play the blame game, and I get no help!!!

I watched an episode of Pan Am just now, and it did not buffer once. My Vudu speed test always shows >9 Meg on my Sony Blu Ray player. I don't know who's fault this is.

Vudu likes to use tracert commands to prove the problem isn't their fault. A couple of my hops show nothing. This COULD be due to those routers being programmed not to respond, but Vudu won't tell you that part. I can ping all of the addresses that Vudu wants me to do tracerts on, and get responses with no packets lost. That's how AT&T likes to prove it's Vudu's fault. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO?!?!?!

I forgot to mention when I called AT&T last time, they asked me if my basic web surfing was working ok. Since it was, they forwarded me to the "Special Tech Support." They won't help you without a credit card number. They don't guarantee a solution, but they "try their very best to help." I don't need to call anybody if I want to throw my money down the toilet. It's looking more and more like Vudu isn't for me. It used to work.

                                Re: Buffering issue

                                I just increased my DSL to 18 Meg. Here's a speedtest.vudu.com result:
                                Results
Download Speed: 17266 kbps (17.3 Mbps)
Upload Speed: 1428 kbps (1.4 Mbps)

I haven't tried a movie yet. That'll be later. I hope you're still monitoring the forums. Really, I do want to be a Vudu customer.
