    Entertainment Terms and Acronyms:

I figured I am not the only one who when confronted with entertainment industry terms and acronyms in the new e-video market, had to go searching to figure out what was being referred to.

As a convenience, I am explaining the ones I know of here:

    1) SVoD = Subscription Video on Demand (Pay a monthly fee, get access to revolving content)
    EXAMPLES: Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu+

    2) VoD = Video on Demand (Rental services & Pay-Per-View)
EXAMPLES: TimeWarner Cable Pay-Per-View, DirecTV Pay-Per-View, iVoD vendors (see below)

    3) iVoD = Internet Video on Demand (Rental services from internet retail outlets)
EXAMPLES: Redbox Instant (when they launch), Vudu Rentals, Amazon Instant Video Rentals, Apple/iTunes Rentals, X-Box Marketplace Rentals, Playstation Store Rentals

    4) EST = Electronic Sell Through (Buying movies from an electronic retailer and owning it forever)
EXAMPLES: Apple/iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Vudu, Flixster, X-Box Marketplace, Playstation Store

UltraViolet facilitates the EST process by providing a standard method for doing so and also maintaining a vendor agnostic copyright locker for each customer which the customer can utilize via an EST vendor of their choice.

The two largest e-retailers in the market, Apple/iTunes & Amazon, have yet to adopt the UV standard. However, some new additions are Redbox Instant, and B&N Nook. Flixster and Vudu are established UV e-retailers.

    5) Packaged Media (Physical entertainment media sold to customers via a traditional retail outlet)
    EXAMPLES: DVD, Bluray Disc

The sale of packaged media is in decline.

    UltraViolet Marketplace Notes:
Recently, the idea of providing a "Digital Copy" to customers when they buy packaged media has taken hold in the market place. It is seen as a feature upsale and is often sold as a "Combo-Pack".

People using UltraViolet from a combo pack purchase are difficult to track. There is no commercial transaction associated, as there is in the EST market. Instead, people just redeem their combo pack digital copy via UV without any additional commercial transaction.

It is thought, UV is most often used from this method. However, information on the utilization of UV from EST vs. the use of UV from Digital Copy redemption is not readily available.

It is recently become clear though that UV has taken over the Digital Copy market. The other two ways of redeeming a Digital Copy are through Apple/iTunes or Windows Media Player. Walking down the movie isle of any retailer of your choice will be clear indication that UV has all but taken over this market feature (see below table).

This second major use for UltraViolet (the first being EST) is estimated to be the principle way UV is utilized and a way to help consumers transition from packaged media to EST. In the UK, this Digital Copy method is the principle use for UltraViolet by outlets like The BBC. Very little UV EST is being done outside the US.

The third use of UV is the disc to digital program offered by Vudu and Flixster(beta). This is seen as an incentive program to also facilitate consumers transition away from packaged media to EST by giving them a way to convert their existing physical media purchases into EST versions, accessible via their UV rights locker.

If you know of others that should be included, just reply to the thread. Thx.

    Re: Entertainment Terms and Acronyms:

...seems like a lot of new folk have been on-boarded. I am raising this past post as a convenience to introduce the terms often used on this Forum.

I can remember when I was new, it took me some time to figure all these out.
