    HD Streaming

I I love Vudu overall but so disappointed that they do not have HD streaming on tablets. I just bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro and would love to see this happen. Flixter offers this for some movies but it is really buggy. This lack of HD streaming has made me look more at Google Play. Is this Vudu or the tablet manufacturer's decisions? Come on Vudu!

      Re: HD Streaming

HD streaming on tablets as a whole seems to be a problem; it's probably studio restrictions. Google Play (for Androids) or iTunes (for iPads) seems to be the best option, but neither participates in UV so it's not much help. Flixster has very few movies cleared for HD on Android, though at least they have some. CinemaNow & Target Ticket never explicitly say they don't do HD on Android, but I've never seen either of them play in HD. At least Vudu is honest about it; they come out and say they only do SD on Androids.

As far as UV movies in HD, the most success I've had has been with the built-in library of my Nook HD (the Nook HD+ also has it). B&N's Nook Video store is a UV provider; IF they have the film, I can stream my UV titles (most of which came from Vudu) in HD from there. However, the link between UV & Nook Video is extremely buggy; if you think Vudu's UV support is bad you've never seen Nook Video's. I've had so many problems unlinking & relinking my Nook to UV, and still not getting all my titles in HD, that I can't recommend it to others just yet. (Edit: B&N does have Nook Video apps for Android & iOS, but they're also affected by the buggy UV link and lack of movie support.)

The good side? SD from Vudu's Android app on the Nook HD is the best SD there is -- light-years ahead of SD from Flixster, CinemaNow or Target Ticket; almost as good as HD from Flixster. (I suspect Vudu actually downconverts its SD streams from HD when available; the others apparently get theirs from the studios in DVD or even VHS quality.) If Nook Video can't handle it, I usually stream from the Vudu app even though B&N recommends Flixster. (Edit: IIRC, Vudu is also the only legal movie download app that fully works on rooted Androids.)

That really sucks to know there is no HDX or at least HD streaming using the Vudu app. I used a Kindle Fire HDX and watched movies and tv shows on Amazon Prime and they all stream in HD. They look really good too. I don't see why would Vudu don't support HD streaming on tablets. I'll probably stick to a laptop, I guess?

I would really like to know as well when hd downloading would be coming to ios and android. Seem well overdue. I love vudu but it's really lacking in the app department

While I'm first to blame the studios for things like this (I'm looking at you, Disney), this is not a studio restriction when iTunes allows it. Limitation is set by Vudu who doesn't want to do the work necessary to enable it, probably due to pending CFF support which will presumably allow it, but that has repeatedly been delayed.

So, first things first. HD streaming on another provider, UV enabled or otherwise, has nothing to do with Vudu. All services have to negotiate for content separately. Ever notice how all UV enabled movies aren't available across all providers?

As such, it is quite possible that most UV providers have decided to not allow HD streaming on tablets/phones. Flixster is the exception, as they are the only service owned by a studio (WB) and I think they allow HD streaming only for WB titles, but I could be wrong.

In any case, the point is that you cannot assume that because one service has HD streaming on mobile, that the other one can do it but won't. Nothing is to be assumed when it comes to the big mess of a world that content licensing is.

Why does flixster give me the option to stream in hd but only does it in sd?
