    Vudu versus Amazon

    Does anyone know the benefit of even using Vudu over Amazon?

    I went to select my 5 free movies and there is not anything I would even care for. Never even heard of the actors so they all must be bombs. I mean if you are trying to entice me to stay at Vudu, that was a grand fail. So then I type in a current movie I'm interested in, and it's priced to sell at $5 over the price at Walmart.

    So what's the benefit?

    Ultra-Violet Compatible
    7.1 Audio on selected titles
    3D video on selected titles

    Amazon
    Proprietary Catalog of Movies & TV, like other streaming services.
    Selection of free to stream titles (ala NetFlix) with Amazon Prime Service.
    No UltraViolet, No 3D, No 7.1

    Vudu is the higher performer and has access to more content in more formats. Amazon is a better value if you're not picky about what you watch.


    The 5 free movies are NOT the latest multi-billion block-busters. They can't afford to GIVE those away to everyone that might sign up and then not stay with the service. Nor would the studios allow them give away a big ticket title.


    Streaming movies often cost more than physical discs. But not always. This is why many of us buy the blu-ray. Redeem the UltraViolet to watch in Vudu and do whatever with the disc.

      The big advantage, from my perspective, is Disc-to-Digital. For a reasonable fee, I can convert my DVDs and Blu-Rays to a version I can stream or put on my tablet to watch there. Amazon just doesn't have anything like that.

        Also, this is kind of like saying why use Netflix if you're paying for Hulu Plus. Sure, if money is tight you might have to decide between those two because they're subscription services, but that's not even the case with Amazon Instant Video and Vudu. You can use both, compare prices, compare quality, and use whichever you prefer if they both have the movie you want to buy. I happen to prefer having all of my content in one place, so I buy content mostly through Vudu, but I have some content on Amazon, too.

          Amazon currently only streams in 720, Vudu has 1080 as an option. Plus many titles are UV compatible, so you can take the rights to watch them to other participating services. This forces services to compete on the value they add to the viewing experience, rather than trapping you into their ecosystem. Vudu is far and above better than any other UV retailer, I rarely buy from anywhere else because of how great the experience is.

            Vudu is a UV retailer (one of about 5 UV retailers). While Amazon does sell digital copies (not UV), they also sell the physical media. But I assume you ware wanting to compare and contrast the digital cloud services.

            Others have mentioned that Vudu offers a higher quality of streaming. Another difference is that Vudu has started adding extras for some movies and I have never seen that on Amazon. Also, if you are interested in selecting a service strictly for digital copies then you will find that Vudu has far more titles than Amazon (for the moment anyway).

            Both services have a lot of television content. Many shows are available on both, some are available on Amazon and not Vudu and vice versa. But that seems to be changing because I have seen several titles added to Vudu over the past few months that were previously only available on Amazon.

            Just try both out and decide for yourself which one is better.

              The only thing that bugs me is that Vudu doesn't have the movies that I want. For example, Wolverine unrated version. It's available in M-GO and Amazon, as far as I know. But it's not available here on Vudu which I'm bummed out about. So there are pros and cons for both services, Vudu and Amazon. However, what kept me to continue to use Vudu, one of the reasons is Ultraviolet. I have two others who I'm sharing with and one of them is my friend, so we build our own personal collection of movies. Vudu's streaming format is amazing, HDX 1080p. Don't get me wrong, Amazon Instant Video is great and it's better if you have Amazon Prime subscription. Amazon does have Wolverine unrated for $19.99, which I'll probably plan on getting if I can't get it as a physical copy. I'll also be getting all the seasons of Gavin & Stacey since Vudu doesn't have it, not just yet. I sure hope Vudu puts it up real soon. I use both of them since one of them won't have the movie I want and the other does, and vice versa but I use Vudu more because I frequently use their app on my PS4.

                For me personally, I think Vudu is vastly better but I do on occasion get a digital movie on Amazon because it's a great price or Vudu doesn't have it. One example is "Impact" where I could only find it on Amazon Instant Video. Also, they are always saying that Amazon doesn't provide the movie in 1080p but I always get it on 1080p by downloading it to my TiVo.

                  I use amazon for the free prime movies and tv but ultraviolet and picture quality is why I buy/redeem movies on vudu. I never buy digital movies through amazon because I like being able to access my movies across different apps if one happens to be down for whatever reason.

                    My wife is a school teacher and there was a title she wanted for her classes that wasn't on Vudu. She got it on Amazon, but later found out the download policy is pretty restrictive. Vudu don't care how many times you get a title for off-line, but there is a some limit with Amazon. She got turned off from that and we are Vudu only now for our static movie library.

                      This is in part due to the fact that Flixster is owned by Warner Brother, while M-Go is backed by DreamWorks and TechniColor. That's obviously a much stronger Studio tie in than you get with Vudu. When a Studio also onlys a streaming service it makes it much easier to control the content. And when they have an association with another Studio, say because they act as a Distributor as well as a Production Studio it just adds that more to the mix.

                        Just to be clear...you do NOT get ANYTHING for free. Amazon Prime now costs $99 per year, that is hardly "free". That is the cost of about 18 or 19 movies (of your choice) on Vudu. Are you saying that you watch ONLY the Amazon Prime Unlimited Videos? If so, how is that working out for you? I do not like someone else picking my content for me. Don't get me wrong, I like some of the television shows they have available for unlimited streaming and sometimes they do have a good movie title available. But if you end up not enjoying the movies they select then you might be better off just renting from Vudu instead. Also, if you ever buy movies that are UV titles, Amazon is not a UV retailer while Vudu is.

                        For the same reason you say you do NOT buy movies from Vudu, I do buy some from Vudu so I can watch on different devices (if I want to). Mostly I buy UV titles so my movies are backed up in my digital locker and available from any UV retailer. But we do have a few Disney and MGM titles that we can only watch on Vudu. I have found that Vudu is available on more devices than Amazon Prime, but Amazon is catching up (if they haven't already).

                          I have Amazon Prime and Vudu along with a bunch of others. I rarely use Amazon Instant Video simply because there is NO android app for it. Like others here I usually buy the disk with the UV code. That way I have a digital copy along with a hard copy. But when I do buy just a digital copy it is through Vudu as the titles generally are viewable on the other UV services. Buying a video on Amazon means I can only watch it there. Also I find that searching for something on the Amazon service is kind of a pain....
