    HD playback on iPad

When can we can expect HD playback on iPad and other tablets?

    #2
    Re: HD playback on iPad

Honestly, this is an incredibly brand-damaging problem. On-the-go tablet playback is a huge driver for owning a digital collection in the first place. Bizarrely, the iOS app now has a download quality setting, but it is non-functional.

Vudu has had years to figure out any technical or licensing difficulties. This question has been asked for too long without so much as a "we hear you." Many people here have spent a lot of extra money for an HDX quality library, with an understandable expectation that SD would not be considered "good enough" for mobile devices by Vudu.

I used to favor Vudu for my frequent digital purchases, as I liked the idea of UltraViolet compatibility (even though, let's face it, there are no other halfway viable UV partners.) I figured, years ago, that HD playback was a problem with a solution that was just around the corner. I gave up. I rarely purchase from Vudu anymore, and have switched to a competing service that offers HD playback on all my devices. I check in once in a while to see if anything's changed, it hasn't.

It's been years. The new app interface is nice, so thanks for that. But my videos are presented in poor quality. Does anything else matter?

I totally agree, guys. Vudu, can you give us an update on this? HDX streaming and downloading would be much appreciated on the iPad app, as well as the Android app.

There was a comment in the Vudu Blog (Jchang - Feb 16th, 2015) that they were working on HD for the iPad.

Yeah I'm also getting close to giving up on VUDU and leaving. Amazon added HD streaming to their IOS app this week so I don't know what VUDU's holdup is. I should mention though that Amazon downloaded content is still SD. On the iPad this is how it currently stands:

          Amazon:
          Streaming Content: HD
          Downloaded Content: SD

          Vudu:
          Streaming Content: SD
          Downloaded Content: SD

          Flixter:
Streaming Content: SD/HD (*only movies owned by Warner stream in HD)
          Downloaded Content: SD

          iTunes:
          Streaming Content: HD
          Downloaded Content: HD

So iTunes is still the only service allowing you to watch your movies in HD when they are streamed or downloaded to the iPad. I don't know why all the other services are still largely SD. If Apple can get permission to stream and download movies in HD, surely the other companies should be able to. I'm sure it's about the money but Warner (who owns Flixter), Amazon, and Walmart (who owns VUDU) are wealthy companies.

That's very good news about Amazon adding HD streaming to its IOS app, Joey. Thanks for sharing! I'm looking forward to watching some Amazon Prime in HD on my iPad. Now if Amazon would add HD downloadable content, that would put it in the realm of excellent news!

Vudu simply must add HDX streaming and downloads to its IOS app, Android apps, and all apps, for that matter. It's no longer a question. As screens keep getting better and better, SD content is going to look worse and worse by comparison. I noticed that CinemaNow offers HD streaming of its movies (including UV movies) on its Google Play Android app. So on my Galaxy Tab, I now use CinemaNow, not Vudu. Vudu needs to just take the plunge. They may have to pay Apple more money, but as I said, HDX offerings on apps are essential for Vudu's brand to remain relevant on all mobile devices.
