Before they worry about 4K, which almost no one has, about giving iPad users some HDX love, please?

Re: VUDU UHD ? Compatible Devices List

Well I for one am eagerly looking forward to UHD 4k on Vudu. Planning on purchasing my first 4K movie on Vudu once it's available.

Fingers crossed for Vizio P-Series support sometime this year!

TiVo Bolt should get it too. Hopefully they do Dolby vision as well with VUDU. The box will be capable of HDMI 2.0a HDR.

I hope that LG goes on this list as well. I have their UHD TV and love it, but don't want to buy a Roku 4 just to view Vudu in UHD when I use other services built into my TV.

Re: VUDU UHD ? Compatible Devices List

There's going to be a ton of already shipped 4k devices that have Vudu that will likely never be upgraded or capable or running Vudu 4k for various reasons. As many have seen this is what happened to Vudu 3D on many 3D Blu-Ray Players and 3D Televisions.

If I don't have a 4K TV yet, but I wanted to buy a Roku 4, will I be able to see the UHD options through the Vudu app on the Roku 4? If so, will I be able to play them?

Roku 4 comes out tomorrow so we'll have to see for specifics.

However in the past you couldn't see the Vudu 3D titles on the Roku because the device wasn't capable of playing them.

The Roku 4 is of course capable of playing Vudu 4k, but if it will display the titles when NOT connected to a 4k TV is hard to say. If I was to guess I would say no because you can't play the 4k stream without the 4k TV. IE the Roku 4 is highly unlikely to down convert the 4k stream to 1080P.

You WILL be able to buy a Roku 4 and use the Vudu app to view and play non-4k titles when connected to a non-4k TV. That's my exact plan in two of my five rooms.

Thanks for the very quick response. I too expect the UHD titles to not be visible unless the TV is also capable of playing 4K. Thanks

It doesn't make sense to me that you can't see movies you can't play. No one will get the hardware to play the movies unless they know they can order them from Vudu.

You will need a 4K TV with HDCP 2.2 support to play UHD on the Roku4. If you don't, you will see the UHD movies, but before purchasing UHD you will be warned that you will be limited to HDX playback without HDCP 2.2.

Since all Samsung 4k TVs with the SEK-3500 can stream UHD with HDR, will you be including them in your list soon?

I have a 4k Samsung as well (UN40JU7100FXZA) and would love to give it a try. No way will I be investing in another Roku just to get UHD Vudu.

Re: VUDU UHD ? Compatible Devices List

While I am quite glad Vudu is on the cutting edge with UHD -- versus that Cupertino company -- I am a little nervous about it.

Dolby Vision is cool and all, but every UHD tv manufacturer (other than Vizio with their premium sets costing more than $6k-ish) are using the industry SMTPE standard HDR10 as the way to decode the encoded high dynamic range. Dolby allows DV to be placed "on top" of HDR10, so hopefully that is what future devices that support Vudu UHD do. It is the best of both worlds, then, and compatible with the existing footprint of HDR devices. (It's a non issue for the Roku 4 since the Roku 4 doesn't support HDR nor P3, so doesn't really support the bulk of the UHD specification, IIRC.)

Similarly, DCI P3 color space is a big deal in UHD, and finally brings the color space of digital theaters into the home. While this feature is not specifically listed in any of the Vudu announcements that I have seen, Dolby Vision can carry this additional color information. So hopefully, again, the devices use the UHD standard for that, in addition to having DV on top of it, so that existing devices that can do the wider color space can make use of Vudu UHD streams.

Finally, for those of us with Comcraptic internet providers, where speeds can be unreliable, the ability to download an HDX movie to a PS3 to watch is EXTREMELY important. While the PS3 (of course) cannot do UHD (no 4k, no HDR10, no P3) I am hoping that there is, at some not too distance point in the future, a device that can cache a movie locally rather than relying on streaming UHD content.
