Large Movie Collections and Why the Bundles/Unbundling Matters.

I think that the filters is a really powerful tool to help a person find a good movie to watch without spending tons of time combing through his or her collection. I've got a large collection of movies. How many movies I have? I'm not actually sure. It's something around 1200, but I can't know unless I go into each bundle and count... and then subtract any that might be doubled.

For example I bought Skyfall when it came out. I didn't have Casino Royale or Quantum of Solace. When the Daniel Craig collection was available, I bought it for the remaining 2, even though the Skyfall was redundant.

(I'd love to be able to gift away made-redundant movies to others, just like I could give an extra blu-ray disc away, but that's a tangent I won't delve into today.)

Anyway, so if I go into movies, say I want to watch an action movie, sort it by release date, and filter it to require 80%+ tomatometer, something interesting happens. Even though I own Casino Royale, it's not in my list. This is because the bundle appears to have its own metadata and is filtered and sorted in as such.

First, it says it has a release date of 2012, as a bundle. That's not true, as it just came out... but that appears to be the release date of the newest movie. Next, it appears to have a rotten tomatoes value of 0%, as a bundle. As do all of the Bond collections, and the indiana jones collection. This is true even though the lowest movie in the collection, Quantum of Solace, is in the 60s. This makes all these movies are effectively unsortable. Not a huge issue for a small collection where you know all your movies or it only takes a couple minutes to sort through, but awful in a large movie collection like my own.

I feel as if Vudu has known these bundles were unpopular for years, but think of it as a problem of obsessive collection fanatics but not a utilitarian problem. I'm just saying that on a practical level, if I am trying to find movies based on certain parameters, anything in a bundle is effectively gone. Yes, I can go and watch Casino Royale manually by scrolling through or searching for the bundle directly and going in. Often though, I don't know what movie I want to watch and am interested in browsing based on parameters. I can't do that with bundled movies.

If you really don't want to break the bundles, why not have each movie just appear individually, but with a logo tying it to its bundle. Clicking on it could even take me into the bundle and I'd go from there to my movie directly. Just have each bundled movie show up individually with its own metadata. Then I can sort through my WHOLE collection, and the bundles are still intact.

I agree and the Bond movies are an excellent example. I have the Daniel Craig and George Lazenby movies as individual titles and have both Connery and both Moore bundles. I still haven't picked up the two Dalton movies, but they will likely be individual titles as well. Life would be so much easier if these were all listed as individual titles. It would be nice if I could create my own bundle of Bond films, but that is really not a big deal. Getting rid of bundles would be a huge improvement. I have around 950 movies and 71 seasons of television, so poor library management is getting to be a problem.

I agree that we should be able to organize our libraries more effectively. Having the ability to create our own bundles would help immensely. So many movies these days are part of a series that if I could put all the related films in their own folder I would reduce the amount of titles to scroll through by more than a hundred.

Couldn't have said it any better than OP. We need to be able to un-bundle these movies. I have the same issue with the Bond movies.

What I want is the ability to create my own custom bundles. When you have hundreds of movies it would really help if you could group movies in a series together. I have at least 25 movie sets that have 3 or more films that belong together. And too many to count that have 2 films that go together. If I could create bundles, it would eliminate a lot of scrolling that it takes to view my whole collection.

Re: Large Movie Collections and Why the Bundles/Unbundling Matters.

I don't know that Vudu could actually unbundle due to how it was sold. Perhaps not.

In any case it should be possible to add a checkbox to leave or explode bundles. The question is how much coding would it take.

The other problem is that bundles also contain movies or extras. If we want a box to only unbundle movies then Vudu would possibly need to go through and flag all these items as movie / include or extra / exclude. This adds yet another set of complexity and possibly a second tier checkbox as some items are not clearly extras or many people might want them to be movies. This could be shorts that were released as part of a bundle with the main movie but we also sold by themselves. Disney / Pixar is a perfect example.

We just need a custom view. They don't need to really break apart the bundles. I do agree allowing us to customize gives Vudu an edge. Once I do the setup, and can see my collection the way I want on Vudu, why would I use anything else?

+1 to the custom view, something like "View all as individual films/episodes"

Would love to be able to unbundle movies and/or create my own bundles. Please look into adding this feature.

As one that has many bundles and a large collection around the 3k range I find the filters and sorting for movies work adequately, but those same options fail to work meaningfully for me with my growing TV collection.

The suggestion of user created groups/bundles might function, but I was thinking more along the lines of what Disney Movies Anywhere has... the user can flag the video as a "favorite" and then use that as another filter option.

I'm sure as more folks get large collections in both Movies & TV discussions like this will have some pretty interesting ideas.

This is certainly a must add feature. I would love to make a custom bundle of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are 12 titles that are part of the whole series already. Its a bit of a pain having to jump around my entire library to watch them sequentially. At the same time, I would love to be able to separate movie bundles that have unrelated films in them. For example, I purchased the bundle of Hall Pass - unrated and Wedding Crashers - unrated, as at the time, it was the only way to get a UV enabled copy of the unrated cut of Wedding Crashers. Its kind of annoying that anytime I want to watch one of those movies, I'm forced to memorize what title its filed under, and navigate through a random bundle. The savings aspect is great, but the altered artwork with the "Bundle" text as well as the above stated issues are kind of annoying.

Re: Large Movie Collections and Why the Bundles/Unbundling Matters.

One of my bigger gripes is actually that you want to watch a specific movie, that as it happens might not be available on Vudu but that you own it.

You type it in search not knowing it's not available. And nothing comes up. Then you go into your My Movies and start endlessly scrolling only to not find it where you expect because it's in a bundle, likely with a name you might not think so you scroll even more.

                          1) Search should pull up movies that can't be purchased if you have purchased it and it's in your library. I have many, many movies in my library that aren't currently available to buy but can be viewed in my collection.

                          2) Movies should be broken out in the My Movies section with a selection box. As extras are often in a bundle and not necessarily tied to a specific movie the extras would be invisible when exploding the movie titles. Otherwise you run into the opposite problem with extras coming up as movies when exploded and some of my movies have a dozen or more extras.

I have said this before also. I consider this a "bug" that they need to get fixed. The search should ALWAYS return movies that we own, regardless of it's availability to others.

They also need to provide a way to "jump" to a position of our sorted list by letter. We have 1,816 titles to date and it takes too long to scroll down to the bottom, or even the middle, of our list. We recently watched the Star Wars movies and it would have been nice to be able to position the list at the first title that begins with an 'S' to start looking.

I would like to be able to unbundle, but I would LOVE to be able to create my own bundles under a new tab called "My Collection" or "My Bundles" with the ability to sequence movies within the bundle.

+1 to this. All movies when searched by title should come up even if unavailable, that way you could still add it to your wishlist and at least know that it was available in the past or might be available in the future. But to search a title I own, find nothing, and then scroll through 2000 titles is ridiculous.
I know people actually calling up and having titles deleted from an account just to make navigating easier. The Vudu tech guys & gals do a decent job as Vudu is available almost everywhere and works great, but the sorting options need work. A big gripe for a long time.......
I really like the idea of a custom view folder, not just having favorites like DMA.
