Does D2D equal UV?

    Does D2D equal UV?

    While doing my last round of Vudu-To-Go movies I noticed that it states these movies are UltraViolet compatible, however yesterday I checked some settings on my UltraViolet Account and noticed the only movies showing up were ones either directly purchased from Vudu or movies redeemed with codes found inside Blu-Ray movies purchased.

    I'm mostly wondering about this when it comes to sharing movies. Will all my Vudu movies be shared or just the ones that appear in my UltraViolet Account? I was going to pick up one of those Roku devices for my mom for Christmas and add her to my account.

    If anyone who is sharing accounts could check this out and give me a heads up I would greatly appreciate it.

    I haven't found a movie that I converted via D2D at home or at Wal-Mart that has not shown up in my UV ecosystem. If it has the UV label then is will be available to everyone you share your library with. Now, if you purchase directly from Vudu and it is not UV, then it will only be available to you (IE, Caprica TV Show, not UV only shows in my library). Also, movies owned by Disney will not be shared. So, things like any Marvel movie owned by Disney, Lucasfilms movies (Star Wars Ep I, II, III, V, VI), Pixar movies, Disney animated movies, things from Touchstone Studios, etc...those won't be shared. Slowly but surely, movies are added to the UV list. If you own it and UV is enabled, then it will show up across the shared libraries.

    Now, if you have a Disney Movies Anywhere account (DMA) you can connect it to Vudu, GooglePlay, iTunes, Amazon prime and Microsoft and those movies will be available to all those services. Those movies will show in your Vudu account but they will not be shared. Nice thing is if you purchase a movie on any of the connected services, it will show up in all of them. With that, you can search for the best price and buy it.

    Now remember, if you buy something on another service, Cinemanow, Flixster, etc and it is not UV, then it will not show in your Vudu library. Amazon Prime is not a UV player so anything bought there won't show up anywhere except on Amazon.

    Now, if you want everything available to your mom, you can just put in your account info into the Roku. It will take up one of your device slots, but anything you buy will be available to her, UV or not.

      Only movies in your UV locker will be shared. Sharing is done using the UV backbone. Occasionally there is a delay in movies making it to your UV locker from Vudu. This is usually only 1 day to a week. If it is longer than that you may want to contact support.

      D2D is for UV titles and basically every title that is D2D eligible is UV enabled with only extremely rare non UV titles reported here that seem to have slipped through the cracks.

        There was also some shuffling around some titles in the past where a Theatrical was activated an the extended version lost UV rights or vice versa. I have Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle-Unrated from D2D but it is no longer UV or d2d eligible. I remember it was a problem with a few movies though I think most ended up getting their UV rights back like There's Something About Mary. Harold and Kumar is the only one I remember that never got it's UV status back. It's pretty rare though to find a movie that is not UV but d2d eligible.

          yes, every D2D will be UV. This is not the same as Insta-Watch though. That is a different program.

          As far as sharing goes, I love it. I have five friends that I UV share with. Each use it in their homes and on the go. This means anytime any one of the six of us adds a title either through a D2D transaction or the purchase of a UV title, it can instantly be watched on any of our TVs. Vudu allows for each account holder to have eight. This means a single purchase/transaction can simultaneously be watched as often as wished on 8x6=48 TVs.

          We do not need to pass around a USB stick with illegal files. Just sit on our couches, kick back, and press play for jaw dropping 1080p clarity to assault us.

          As far as I am concerned, this is the best disruptive technology of our generation.

            Except there are indeed a few rare titles that are D2D eligible that are not UV. And only three streams can be simultaneously watched at a time, not forty-eight.

            From UV's own FAQ:
            How many different UltraViolet movies and TV shows can users of a single UltraViolet Library watch at the same time?
            Unlimited if they are watching downloaded (local) files, and up to three online streams at the same time.

              The UV imposed limit of 3 streams was abolished, now the limit is left up to the UV players.

                  Wow, a friend sent me this.
                  The streaming limit was decentralized, leaving the maximum number of simultaneous streams up to studios and retailers. (UltraViolet originally allowed 3 simultaneous streams, across all services.)

                  They really need to update both Vudu's and myuv.com FAQs on this.

                  That's awesome! So what is Vudu's limit? Is it just for as many devices as you have hooked up to an account then?

                    48, plus however many portable. The 48 number is just TV streams.

                    IMHO, they are crafting the technology to make it a killer to illegal file download. The head of DECE is a former lawyer from Sony who dealt with copyright infringement strategy.

                    From my view, they are initially successful. The easy of use makes the need for the passing around of files unnecessary. If it costs a few dollars to be legit, I am all for it. Above boards and stupid easy to use.

                    Sign me up.
