UHD playback on Roku 4 glitches, non-Vudu playback stable

I received a new Roku 4 for Christmas, and set it up on my AV rig (with my Samsung UN65JS9000FXZA TV and Pioneer Elite SC-95 receiver). I get stable HDMI link, and can play content, including 4K, from other sources. I have tried playing Vudu 4K content, and have had a couple of issues.
    • Playing 4K UHD streams via Vudu occasionally, at random intervals, gives green noise flashes on the right side of my screen. While watching "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.", it did that about a half-dozen times. I saw the same while 2-minute samples of other movies. Playing 4K content via Netflix doesn't glitch like this.
    • When starting playback of "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.", I received a message saying that HDCP 2.2 couldn't be established, and that it would fall back to HDX quality. However, when I pressed the "Up" arrow button on the Roku remote, the Roku app showed UHD quality and a full buffer (and my receiver showed 4K/24p mode and Atmos audio) after that, though.

So far, the issues seem to be localized to the Vudu app only. Please let me know if you need any additional details about my setup.

I'm having exactly the same issue with a Roku 4 connected to a Sony XBR65X930C TV. UHD content from other apps seems to work find but whenever I try to watch UHD content from Vudu, I regularly get green flashes on the right half of the screen. Watching UHD content from M-Go does not manifest the same symptoms and moving the Roku doesn't change anything . it is clearly isolated to the Vudu app on that hardware.

I had purchased a title and went back asked for a refund since there is no way for me to watch the content I purchased properly without this error condition.

Please report these issues to Roku. HDCP 2.2 handling and UHD decoding are handled by their hardware, not the VUDU app.

Already did that and they blamed Vudu app since the symptom doesn't manifest in any other UHD content from the device. Bottom line, this issue is 100% reproducable and neither party wants to own it or resolve.

I checked with our QA lead on Roku; VUDU QA has streamed UHD movies to Roku4 hundreds of times (as well as to other devices) and the only instances they had of green flashing were an early Roku bug they fixed and a defective unit that was replaced. It's not the content - it's either a Roku bug of bad hardware.

Update: there may be a bug in Roku's latest firmware causing this. We have reported it to them to look into.

My Roku received a firmware update the other day that may have included a fix. Immediately prior to that update the green flash condition could be reproduced on demand just watching the 2 minute preview of a movie. I applied the firmware update and so far, on the previews I can no longer see the condition. I'm reluctant to spend any money to test if it's stable now for a whole movie but maybe I'll take a chance on an inexpensive rental tomorrow night to see if it might be fixed.

Update: Looks like the above was a false result. I checked again tonight and the symptom shows up in the first 5 seconds of the 2 min previews of Man of Steel and San Andreas. Glad I didn't spend any money to find out it is still not working properly. It might be time to give up on Vudu 4K until it's reliable enough to work on multiple platforms instead of only 2 now and return this Roku 4 to Best Buy.

Purchased the Roku 4 this weekend hoping that the issues below were already resolved. I have a large collection of Vudu movies already, so our plan was to use Vudu + Roku for building out our 4k movie content. However, the first movie we rented tonight (Pan - its family friendly) has sporadic green flashing on the right side of the screen. Confirmed that we have the latest software updates.

Testing Amazon video has not shown same issues, so I presume its the Vudu application. Anyone have updates on this issue?

Same thing happening here. New Roku 4 purchased 3 days ago gets these green glitches only when playing UHD on VUDU. HDX works fine and UHD works great on all other compatible apps.

I also get the message that my TV is not compliant for UHD playback but my TV is well above the standards to play it and it does even though the message is always displayed.

Hopefully we get a fix soon cause paying $30 bucks to upgrade titles I already own in HDX sucks when you have issues like these.

Disappointing that they still haven't fixed this. I made the mistake of not returning the Roku to BB in time so I now I have another piece of tech 'shelfware'.

4k Vudu was my primary reason for purchasing the Roku 4 it since Vudu has all these silly restrictions on what platforms they support specific features. UHD is supported only on Roku apparently, 3D is only on Samsung, etc... At least I know that trying it again in hopes that its fixed now is a waste of time.

It's a Roku firmware bug that they know about and are working on. It's a regression (wasn't there when the VUDU app initially launched) so I assume it is fixable once they figure it out.
