No center channel on 7.1-encoded streams

I have a PS3 connected by HDMI to a Dolby Digital 7.1-capable Sony receiver. On some streams, the center channel plays fine, on others there is nothing coming from the center speaker.

On describing this to tech support and listing some examples of streams that worked and those that didn't, they reported that the ones that didn't work were encoded with 7.1 surround and those that I reported as working were encoded with 5.1.

    Example:

Once Upon a Time, Season 2, Episode 1 uses 7.1: no center sound
Once Upon a Time, Season 2, Episode 2 uses 5.1: center is fine

(Odd that two episodes of the same season are encoded differently, but Vudu confirmed this was the case, and that's consistent with it failing for me too).

Tech support wasn't able to provide any solution, though.

Anyone else having this problem with some titles?

Re: No center channel on 7.1-encoded streams

Not sure why they told you it was 7.1... but otherwise they were in the right ballpark with the explanation.

The issue w/ PS3 is with titles encoded with DD 2.0 - in that case the PS3 is upconverting the 2.0 to 5.1, but it's doing it badly so that all of the audio is put on the L/R channels (rather than doing "matrix"/Pro Logic decoding to create 5.1 channels).

We have a fix that will preserve the LPCM 2.0 output for 2.0 sources rather than encode to 5.1 - this will allow your receiver to apply Dolby Pro Logic decoding to the audio to get proper surround. I'm not sure what the timeline is on that - it will be with the next PS3 app update, though.

A somewhat lame workaround is to set your PS3 output to LPCM 2.0 for that title, though of course that would be annoying to have to switch it back and forth...

Thanks for the reply, Jake! Ok, that explanation makes more sense, and I'm glad to hear that a fix is in the works.

I don't quite understand your suggested workaround, though. As I understand it, if the PS3 is configured to output 2 channel LPCM, the receiver will just play that as received, as LPCM is already a decoded stream. If the PS3 could bitstream the output to the receiver, then the receiver would perform its own decoding. But bitstreaming isn't an option for the HDMI connection for PS3 apps, as far as I can tell.

I also tried the suggestion by disabling all but 2 channel LPCM under the PS3 Settings->Sound->Audio Output Settings->HDMI, and sure enough, it just plays plain 2-channel stereo then.

Please let me know if I'm missing something in the suggestion. Otherwise, hope the fix comes out soon.

      Thanks

Yeah, the PS3 doesn't support bitstreaming for apps right now, just their BD player (we can hope...)

With what you set up, your receiver should be seeing LPCM 2.0 now, which is what you want (in effect it's not really any different from analog stereo) With that input most receivers will let you enable Dolby Pro Logic decoding mode (you might have to change the surround mode on your receiver to turn it on).

Re: No center channel on 7.1-encoded streams

Because there is atleast 2 other channels encoded into the left and right channel of 2.0 and the receiver should be able to decode those two (or is it four?) channels from the left and right channels, thus giving you 4 or more channels from the outputted two.
