Which Device for the Best Black Level?

I am a long-time Vudu user with a large library and have been using Roku boxes pretty much from the beginning. The one complaint I have is that the black levels are really not that great. I realize that streaming is not going to give me the kind of low-light detail a Blu-Ray will, but I wonder if some of my problem is with the limitations of the Roku.

Have any of you found that one platform offers better performance than the others? For example, do Oppo Blu-Ray players offer picture quality advantages over Roku, XBox or Playstation? I am very curious to hear about other peoples' experiences with different clients.

I've found that it is more due to the TV you are watching on. I haven't really noticed any difference between streaming from my Bluray player vs my Tivo vs my AppleTV vs my firestick. The biggest thing with those is normally volume levels. Now, watching on my Samsung TV out in the living room (DLP based TV) vs my Projector (LCD Based) in my Mancave, the blacks are better in my room because I can control the ambient light better and LCDs have a better black level than DLP. That's not to say you can't get a really good picture with DLP, you just have to go in and fine tune your TV, which most people don't bother to do.

If you can, test on different TVs to see which one gives you the best results. Ultimately, it is user preference as to what looks good. I'm old and my eyes aren't as good as they used to be so I may see things a bit different than you.

I have a very well calibrated Samsung LED Light Engine DLP set and I run video through a Darbee processor on the way in. I also have pretty good lighting control. The compression used with streaming tends to crush blacks and limit low light detail. I am simply curious to find out if any of these streaming clients perform better than the others. I've used a couple generation of Roku boxes and a PS3.

Point source screens are really the only way to go. IE Plasma, OLED.

I use PMCv2: Panasonic Black Level (MLL) Restoration Device. Simply put, a PMCv2 (which stands for Panasonic MLL Clearer, version 2) is a device that connects to the ?secret service connector? inside the back of your Panasonic Plasma television. Once installed, the PMCv2 periodically and automatically resets the black level of the TV to its original, inky black, fresh-out-of-the-factory settings.
