Dolby Atmos 5.1 / 7.1, More Info Screen, Chromecast Ultra & A/V Receivers

Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 (including Atmos) bitstream is working with the Chromecast Ultra via my AVR; however, Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 (with or without Atmos) is not.

Despite the fact that Google does not officially support the use of external devices with the Chromecast Ultra, a Google support agent has said that 7.1 audio will work with external devices if the app supports it and the AVR or TV sends the correct EDID.

Does the VUDU Chromecast Ultra app support 7.1 audio?

Regardless of the answer, please add the full description for Dolby Atmos tracks to the "More Info" screen on VUDU apps that will cast to the Chromecast Ultra. Currently, some apps specify "Dolby Atmos 5.1" or "Dolby Atmos 7.1" while others simply state "Dolby Atmos".

The distinction is important with the Chromecast Ultra. In cases like mine, Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 w/Atmos tracks will play back in Dolby Atmos, but Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 w/Atmos tracks will play back in standard 5.1.

This makes a difference in which titles I rent, purchase, or pass by.

All Dolby Atmos is being replaced with "5.1" DD+ compatibility, since Dolby has deprecated Atmos w/ 7.1 (some newer devices already do not properly support it, as you saw).

Once this "replacement" has occurred, VUDU titles that are currently "Dolby Atmos 7.1" will play back in Dolby Atmos on these newer devices like the Chromecast Ultra?

They *should* (if not, we will investigate). My guess is either the Chromecast or your receiver could not support Atmos/7.1, so it stripped off the extra 2 channels and Atmos metadata. With With Atmos/5.1 it shouldn't need to do that. It's really up to the lower level player, though, the VUDU Cast app doesn't interact with the stream at that low level.

Note of course (you probably know this) Atmos is not 7.1 or 5.1, it has 3D positional info and can do up to 5.1.4. The 5.1/7.1 is for DD+ compatibility.

All indicators are pointing to the Chromecast player, since the same Atmos/7.1 bitstreams pass correctly from other devices.

That was my guess, but it is nice to know.

Jake, any update on how the 7.1 > 5.1 Atmos conversion is coming, and when it might be complete? Some of my Atmos titles will still not play on CCU.

I checked and Edge of Tomorrow & Mad Max are the only ones still in Atmos 7.1.

And, of course, those are exactly the two I check. LOL. Glad to hear the conversion is nearly complete. Thanks!

These last two should be done by this evening.

Is the VUDU app on the Chromecast Ultra now indeed ouputting both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos?

Yes, AFAIK. I have not witnessed it personally, but other users report that both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos from VUDU now work through the Chromecast Ultra - assuming the rest of the system supports those formats.
