No 3D support in the Xbox Vudu app?

Why is there no 3D available in the Vudu app? I know the Xbox is only using Vudu's 720p HD modes, but why exclude the 720p 3D content?

The Xbox does not currently support 3D output for video content. If/when Microsoft adds this support we will definitely add it to the Vudu app.

Did you mean, the vudu app on x360 does does currently support 3d output?

Because as far as I know - an update earlier this year turned this function on for the xbox 360 hardware - there are video games that support 3D currently being released and there are settings for 3d in my xbox360 settings panel?

No media apps currently support it, since the new media apps launched in December use an app framework that doesn't support 3D video.

I guess we are one of the few (only?) streaming services that are doing 3D right now... trust me, if it were possible to do on the Xbox, we'd have done it

Thanks, that helps - i thought you were saying the xbox didn't do 3d at all - but media apps, i understand...

Re: No 3D support in the Xbox Vudu app?

            Hi Jake.

I can confirm that the 3d support DOES work on Xbox 360, the only problem appears to be that the VUDU app isn't displaying the 3d movies from the search.

I own one of the passive LG 3d televisions, the 55LW5300 and was very excited to hear about the 3d streaming capabilities but was sad to learn that according to the vudu website the Xbox 360 3d isn't yet supported.

Anyways, I didn't let that slow me down from trying out the app anyways. I downloaded it to the Xbox 360, opened it up and did a search for the word 3d, I was able to bring up the Sharks 3d movie but that was the only actual 3d movie I could find.

I switched my TV into steroscopic 3d mode and watched the 2 minute preview.

It worked fine, the 3d effect looked great, so it seems more like the technical limitation is in place by VUDU rather than the Xbox 360 console.

Is there any chance you could remove the 3d search restriction on the Xbox 360 so we can all start streaming 3d movies? I suspect it will be a very popular platform for this type of thing.

3d on Xbox 360 does work

I realized I didn't tell you my full specs for the setup at home.

I have one of Xbox 360 "Elite" models with HDMI built in, I am connected to the LG55LW5300 TV through HDMI, it is a passive 3d system with glasses, similiar to the movie theatre technology. I am running the xbox dashboard systems software version 2.0.14699.0 that was released on December 6th, this is the first dashboard software to support 3d. I believe that the 3d supports a maximum of 720P, there doesn't appear to be a 3d 1080P option at this time.

The 3d enabling option is listed on the Xbox 360 under System Settings -> Console Settings -> Display -> 3D TV

As long as the 3d option is enabled on the XBOX 360 you can turn on the 3D TV to "left to right stereoscopic 3d" mode with the remote control and watch the Shark 3d movie in proper 3d mode bug free as far as I can tell from VUDU.

              Hope this helps out..

The actual reason is format but the simple answer to this is for VUDU to offer the ability for 3d movies to be displayed using SBS (Side by Side). So it is completely possible. Xbox's 3d uses the feature in a passive manner, requiring players to use the 3d display's ability to detect the SBS signal and then merge the two images to get the 3D effect but the PS3 (being an actual 3d Blu-Ray player and game console) actually sends a real 3D signal to the display. You don't have to hit the 3D button, the display recognizes it and Boom u have a true 1080p 3D HD picture. Now I'm not sure if in the recent updates we've received (360 owners) over the last few months have added support for that type of 3D but as far as games go, since the Xbox games are still on 10GB Dual Layer DVDs they don't have the space to make a really full game AND add that feature. A 90 minute 1080p 3D Movie takes up about 7GB so the only way to achieve it would be through downloadable content... But, to sum it all up, it would be seriously easy for Vudu to do. Netflix will do it soon just as your cable services do. Hell even YouTube is doin it lol

Ok, to clarify/correct a few technical points in there

                    * VUDU movies are currently encoded L/R or T/B, but that doesn't mean we won't use another method (interleaving or frame packing, etc) in the future if it results in better quality/more efficient encoding. Devices would have to support those natively (not rely on the TV) for it to work on all combinations of hardware - anything less is a customer support nightmare

                    * The feature on the PS3 (and other 3D capable BD players, etc) is HDMI 1.4 3D signalling, where the output device tells the display the signal is 3D, and what format is being used. In the case of the PS3 the output is frame packed (30fps 3D interlaced at 60Hz).

                    * The trickiest part (and why neither VUDU nor Microsoft will officially support 3D for media apps yet) is actually getting the on-screen graphics correct - they need to be overlaid correctly on both "left and right" eye images, otherwise they will be messed up. "Passive" 3D that you mention ignores this, and while the video is still watchable 3D, the user experience is not very good. Until there is a solution for that I guarantee you won't see 3D officially supported on the XBox, Microsoft is very picky about their user experience

The movie Shark Night 3D worked perfectly on my system as well! My Xbox is set up the same as yours...The 3D option Enabled under System Settings -> Console Settings -> Display -> 3D TV.

However my 3DTV is the Sony Bravia 46HX800, an Active Shutter 3D Television and with the 360's 3DTV option disabled, I actually can still shift the TV to Side/Side or Over/Under to play movies formatted as such.

The 3D TV option was implemented around late June or August of last year (The media took late notice of this, announcing it long after it was already there).

I believe it was only for the purpose of increasing 3D support to handle True 3D Frame Packing in games and 'Experiences' that support it as per Microsoft. What hasn't been made clear is exactly what form of Frame Packing the 360 is now able to use.

Still, the 360 has always been able to handle Side by Side and Over/Under (also called Top/Bottom)

Nevertheless, (Once I shifted the TV to 3D SBS mode) it worked great when playing back the Shark Night 3D which use to be available on the 360 VUDU app; why it was removed alludes me...

A Note to Jake (VUDU Engineering)

While I don't know if the process is exactly the same on the 360, (ie. fps operation, 60Hz interlacing and such), I do know that enabling the Xbox settings we mentioned above actually allows for the occurrence of a greatly similar signalling method such as the one you mention here:
Originally posted by Jake View Post

The use of the 360's newly implemented 'frame packing' 3D signalling method can be seen in two games that I know of; Batman Arkham City and Jimmie Johnson's Anything With An Engine and I can tell you, they are definitely using the Xbox to tell the display the signal is 3D; automatically pushing the TV into 3D operation. Ofcourse, with no need then, to manually change the TV to something like Side/Side or Over/Under.

So considering this, one would expect that quite possibly, this signalling method could likely also be used with your 360 VUDU app... I mean it has to be some form of HDMI 1.3 or 1.4 3D signalling for this to be working the way it is on the 360 now, so perhaps this is something your team could investigate further by seeing how these two Video Games are doing it...

All of the XBox 360 media apps released with the new Dash update (VUDU, ESPN, Hulu, YouTube, etc) are based on a Silverlight-based platform/SDK (http://gigaom.com/video/xbox-live-silverlight/) that doesn't provide the same low level access to hardware that games get. But once MS does provide support for 1080p video and 3D to this app platform, we will be sure to add it to VUDU

Any word on 3D support for the 360? I'm ditching my PS3 but keeping my 360 and have a few 3D videos I'm not looking forward to losing access to. (I also have a ROKU- is there a reason the roku can't play SBS and we can just tell our TV's to make it work?
