Re: VUDU buffering issues are getting worse

In case anyone is still finding or following this thread.

I enjoy Vudu and use it everyday.

I am a Lead Cable Service Tech. I go to a lot of service calls for streaming video not working. Your ISP will more than likely say if your speedtest says your speed, its not them. This is only correct about 50% of the time. From your ISP to your TV there can be a number of things keeping VUDU from working properly. Do 10 speed tests and take the average to be more accurate. ISPgeeks is a nifty site to try out, it can actually somewhat trouble shoot your ISP for you.

The most common issue I find to be the cause is the router. When a router starts to fail it tends to slow and loose packets. Your router can reset it self to correct internal errors and you may not see it. I have a few test routers I know to be working and I let my customers use them for a day or two to verify it is their router. Some just go buy a new one and if not the issue they take it back. Once you start getting bandwidth intensive the router will start to heat up and throw errors. Dropping wifi or loosing wifi range is one of the first signs of a weakening router.

Another common cause is the modem, most are provided by your ISP. I have seen a lot of bad cable and DSL modems. Most techs carry or supply test modems to verify it is not your modem.

Vudu uses more bandwidth than the other services. When you have network issues other slower lower quality services may work.

Try your vudu movie in SD, in my opinion it is comparable to netflix HD. When my router was going out, I used to have to switch to HD from HDX to keep from buffering.

Thanks lionhrt475. Appreciate the information. I do have a question though. Vudu, through my Roku XS, constantly buffers however when I watch Budu through my Panasonic Blu-Ray or LG Blu-Ray or TV there is little to no buffering. The difference is that the Roku is receiving the wifi signal at 2.4 ghz and the others @ 5 ghz from my dual band router. Could that be the reason for the better reception? I don't want to replace my sister's Roku with the newer Roku 3 since I'm installing a dual band router for her as well if there will be no benefit. I can implement cheaper options to get her Vudu if that is the case. Appreciate any help you can provide. By the way my ISP is Verizon FiOS at 25 Mps.

With the Roku devices, a reboot can usually result in much better streaming results.

I've been a VUDU user for quite some time, and have enjoyed many buffering free HDX movies. Lately, over the last 3 months, I have experience a number of buffering issues, where the movie stops and rebuffers frequently. This doesn't happen every movie, but it is happening with greater frequency.

My internet connection, as tested by VUDU speedtest, was 13mb download, so my ISP is not the problem, at lest during the test. I have 15mb fios service. Yet again I had a problem.

I am getting sick and tired of contacting VUDU to fix this problem. With more buffering issues tonight, I waited on the phone for 30 minutes tonight before finally giving up. Maybe vudu would like to contact me instead.
First step to do is "RESET" your vudu playing device. Unplug it, clear its buffer, etc. I have found that once this is done, the reception is much better.

Re: VUDU buffering issues are getting worse

I am new here. I have a magnavox blue ray player I use to watch vudu. I always have trouble with buffering. Last month I tried to watch interns and had to quit watching 3/4 way through because it was buffering so bad. Wasted my money. I was talking with a cable repair guy and he said that each device has different buffer sizes. Don't know if he is correct. So if I unplug my device will it clear out my buffer memory? I have not tried to tweak my router yet. It is a modem/ router combo. Get bad buffering with both wifi and hard wire. Thanks in advance for any help.

I suggest you unplug your device for a minute and then plug it back in. This will clear the memory. This could very well solve your problem. If the problem persists, I suggest you contact customer care so they can troubleshoot along with you.
