BX100 Refusing to connect to internet

    Hi There,
I recently came into possession of an unopened BX100. I'm currently stuck on the third step, where it attempts to find the internet connection, and it always fails. I have tried DHCP, a static IP, a static IP in a DMZ, and then a direct connection to my cable modem (after resets) with the same result. The best I can get is an acknowledgment of my home network. I'm on Comcast using wired connection to a Linksys WRT54GS, which connects to an ARRIS WBM760. All my other devices, wired and wireless, are working fine. What might be causing this and what might be done to resolve it

Thank you! Looking forward to the movies!

Did you ever get this figured out? I just purchased a new one as well.

I don't know why yours won't connect to the internet, but if it's a brand-new unused unopened box it might be because the box has the old original firmware. I have one of these boxes I got years ago, and mine still works. But the firmware has been upgraded several times over the years, and completely changed how the VUDU service works. It was originally a peer-to-peer sharing box. Vudu's servers provided movie selection etc., but the movies were mostly not streamed from VUDU's servers. The BX100 was built with a large hard drive, and was designed to be on all the time. Movies were stored on users set-top boxes, and when you wanted to view a movie, it streamed it in pieces from various other users boxes, not from a VUDU server. When you weren't watching movies, your box might be providing content to other VUDU users. It was a true peer-to-peer movie service. But sometime later, this was changed to more typical streaming from a centralized VUDU server. When Vudu made this change, the firmware on all the BX100 boxes was updated for the streaming model. This was done automatically. The old peer-to-peer service isn't available anymore, and the servers that supported it may be shut down by now. If you have an old box with the original firmware it may be trying to contact the peer-to-peer service, and can't reach to it. This may be why a couple of people are reporting problems trying to use old BX100 boxes that have never been used before.

Here's a test to see if your box is actually connecting to the internet:

Log in to your router (check the router's manual if you don't know how). It probably has an option to list the devices that are attached. If the Vudu box is connected, it should show up in this list. You should see it appear when the Vudu box is on and attached, and it should disappear if you shut it down or unplug the network cable.

If this shows it connected to your router, but the box still complains about no network connection, my guess is it's trying to reach an old Vudu server that may not be there anymore. The BX100 box is from around 2007. As I mentioned in my previous post, the VUDU sevice was changed from a peer to peer to a streaming service years ago. Your box may be still trying to reach the peer to peer service if it never got the firmware upgrade for streaming. If that server isn't there anymore, maybe the box reports that as a network problem.

Re: BX100 Refusing to connect to internet

I notice another thread here titled "BX100 firmware Upgrades should be allowed" confirms what I thought.

Due to changes in how VUDU's service works since when this box was built, the original firmware won't work. The servers for the original P2P service aren't there anymore. You need the firmware for the streaming service.

VUDU upgraded the firmware on the active boxes via an automatic download. According to that other thread, that upgrade is no longer available. If your box never got it, it's too late, and it appears there's no way your box is ever going to work.

As I asked in another question, it appears the newer firmware on these boxes may not be supported either. They work for the older features of the movie service, but it appears new features like "Movies on Us" (free, with ads) are not supported. My box displays the available Movies on Us titles, but the only options for viewing are the rent and own options. There's no way to choose the free version. I suspect this is because the latest firmware for the box, if you got it, probably isn't supported anymore either, and new features may not work.
