    Comcast Data Cap

As an avid user of VUDU on a daily basis, and the impending Comcast Data Cap, I, as well as others around me have concerns how this will affect the way we watch VUDU.

    Since users use on average
    "The maximum bitrate for HDX is about 9Mbps = 1.125MB/s. So a 2 hour movie would be: 7200s * 1.125MB/s = 8100MB ie. 8.1GB." [posted by Jake from Vudu Engineering. 7/13/2011 #2
    https://forum.vudu.com/showthread.ph...ng-Estimation]
This isnt even touching on 4k streams and 3D streams.

So doing some math (please correct me if i'm wrong), it comes out to 4.21 hours of vudu per day for 30 days(4.21 hrs x 8.1 GB x 30 days). Now I might be in the minority here, but I'm a cable-cutter, so I purchase a ton of content through VUDU, and use other streaming services as well. To be fair, I do have access to Satellite TV, but commercials really destroy the experience. That's why I consider myself a cable-cutter

My question is this, is there something in the works to compress streams to an even smaller amount that way we can watch more VUDU? Because of this, my investment is now in jeopardy, I've been spending money at VUDU indiscriminately, but now I might take pause before I purchase, from here on out.

Will VUDU lobby the government and the FCC to get rid of the Data Cap? I know you guys have a big stake in this fight and want to know your official position on this. The future of streaming will only get bigger, and this data cap is unreasonable to people that have Comcast and love VUDU. One way you could do this is to follow the lead of another Streaming provider and file a grievance with the FCC. http://arstechnica.com/information-t...-unreasonable/
It's time for VUDU and Wal-Mart to step up for their most loyal users and let the world know that this is not OK. Thank you for any response.

So I was curious how big each movie is on average and it looks like 4K movies are going to be 100GB (sweet Jesus).

With 1000GB being in 1TB (the new limit) you can only watch about 10 movies in 4K... and from that... you have no internet for anything else

    4K Movies @ 100GB / 1TB Limit = ~10 movies in a month
    Blurays @ 25GB / 1TB Limit = ~40 movies in a month

I'm sure Comcast has done the analysis too. It's just a sneaky price increase. They charge more for you to watch your movies unless Comcast sells them to you.

        9Mbps = 1.125MB/s. So a 2 hour movie would be: 7200s * 1.125MB/s = 8100MB ie. 8.1GB

        4.21 hours of vudu per day for 30 days(4.21 hrs x 8.1 GB x 30 days)

Just one small mistake that I saw is the 8.1GB is for 2 hours, so the 4.21 hrs would be doubled, so more like 8.42 hrs per day....

As for the the 4k@100GB/BD@25GB....those are sizes on disks....fortunately streaming sizes of movies are much smaller. I don't know exact sizes but I believe Vudu states a 11000kbps connection for Uhd is needed. That comes out to roughly 5GB an hour, I'm sure that's the min so a faster connection will use more but I don't think it will get no where near 100GB for 1 movie.

Who has time to watch 8 hours of video every day? I sure don't. I am lucky if I can watch one movie every two days. Even if I was retired, I wouldn't have that much time to watch movies.

We have more than one person streaming at a time; Usually 2, sometimes 4. Most families will hit the cap with 4K movies.

              Re: Comcast Data Cap

I watch about 5-7 films on Vudu almost daily but I'm currently out of work due to my health. In short, if I had Comcast, I'd have issues because my brother also primarily uses Roku to stream content as well and then on top of movies, I game and a lot of newer games are 20-40 gig downloads. I looked into this whole Comcast thing to see if they had a package that doesn't have the cap but all I could find is something about paying an additional 30-40 dollars to avoid caps? I don't have a blu ray player, the wi fi on it broke a few months back so I sold it, and the movie channels on cable blow. So thankfully, I'm in Spectrum country and the FCC made them agree they can't make changes, or add data caps (even though they never said they planned on it) for seven years if they wanted to merge with TWC, and well, they merged with TWC.

A workaround is if you only need internet, see if you can get Comcast business class (or commuter if that's available through your employer). It might be a little more per month (or get slightly slower service), but no data caps.
