    Re: Bandwidth Consumption

As soon as I hit the power button my lights stop flashing and they don't start up again for a few minutes. Once they start up again when I check the bandwidth, it's uploading at 330kbs.

On my switches, the only time the link light flashes constantly is when there is a steady stream of data being sent or received.

Based on your OP at http://forum.vudu.com/showpost.php?p=35381&postcount=1 , it looks like your box is still busy getting caught up with all the software and catalog updates that happended while it was unplugged by the original owner. My total upload bandwidth for the month of February is 44.6G (includes Vudu traffic and a lot of ReplayTV IVS uploading). For the week of Feb 8-14 my total LAN upload was 14.27G. For the partial week of Feb 15-20 my total LAN upload was only 8.57G.

Give it a couple weeks and it will stabalize.

          Re: Bandwidth Consumption

I believe one of VUDU folks posted that after initial updates, normal monthly usage is less than 10 GB (up & down).

Here is another data-point for you all:

I have been monitoring my bandwidth consumption fairly closely using my Tomato router firmware (since purchasing the Vudu box around 3 months ago).

Based on the router stats I can provide rough estimates of quiescent bandwidth use, i.e. the amount of data transferred by the box while idle. During initial synchronization (which lasted approximately 2 weeks), the unit downloaded ~80GB of data. Since synchronization completed, it has been uploading ~3GB/week and downloading ~8GB/week.

I have set the box to the lowest level of Service Quality to reduce the outbound utilization as much as possible.

              Re: Bandwidth Consumption

Well, I appreciate everyone's comments/concerns regarding bandwidth. As I work from my home office every day, my vudu was and still is impacting my available bandwidth for web browsing, e-mail, and VPN for remote file sharing. I have setup port forwarding for my vudu which helped a little but I still have to unplug my vudu from the internet in order to work.

I bought my Vudu because there weren't any good movies on cable when I wanted to watch a movie. The quality of the movies I download are great, the selection is very good, and UI is awesome.

My parting comment is: If there was a "try this if you are having problems" document that included a discussion of typical or expected bandwidth consumption, router configurations to alieve/mitigate bandwidth issues, and a general discussion of why vudu pushes and pulls data over your internet connection, I would not have spent the time posting my concerns.

              Again, Thanks for the feedback.

                Re: Bandwidth Consumption

Port forwarding settings really shouldn't do much.

What will really help you is if you use a 3rd party router software with QoS settings. Then you can set the Vudu uploads to low priority and all your important business services to high priority. The router will act as the traffic cop and allow the important stuff through first.

The other option is to simply set your Vudu for low bandwidth usage when not using it and then crank it up to instant SD or instant HD when you want to watch movies.

you could always just limited the UL bandwidth with the tomato QOS settings, that would greatly limit the UL usage if that concerns you. Or, if you are using other devices that require it, like slingbox, homeserver, VC software, voip, etc, that will help greatly.

Make sure to turn it UP when you want to do a lot of movie downloads though. You DL bandwidth will be limited from VUDU otherwise.

                    Re: Bandwidth Consumption

How is that? Are you saying the VUDU tracks your UL contribution and reduces DL is it is 'to low' or simply that if you reduce your UL below the amount needed to support 4MBps down you won't get the full 4?

Said another way, is it VUDU doing the limiting or simply a function of the bandwidth needs of an IP network?

                      Re: Bandwidth Consumption

There is a minimum upstream bandwidth that the VUDU needs to support downloading at 4 mbps. If you cut the VUDU down below this number it can't manage the streams of content efficiently and you go from instant viewing to delayed no matter how large your downstream internet connection is.

VUDU streaming algorithms are proprietary but you can understand that latency is a killer in any delivery mechanism that is "real time". If you increase the latency of outbound the inbound suffers.

I think there is a post or two from one of the members that have played around with QOS on their routers and had a estimate of what the cut off point was. You may want to do some searching here on the board for more information.

                        Re: Bandwidth Consumption

The best thing to do is to use QoS and set priorities for devices on your network and not set limits. If you set the Vudus to low priorities everything else will get moved to the line in front of the Vudu.

                          Re: Bandwidth Consumption

I'm glad I have a 50mbs/20mbs conection. I have enough bandwidth so it's rare that I run into any bandwidth problems. I certainly don't with low bandwidth devices like VUDU(low when compared to my total bandwidth).
