    IGMP 10/100/1000 Ethernet Switch

I have been playing around with Multicast IP and I like it except that with a "dumb" swtich the stream gets broadcasted out every port. Does anyone know a good inexpesive IGMP v3 capable switch. All I can seem to find is Cisco hardware and that is not very "home" friendly.

I was looking at Netgear but they low end offering is only IGMP v2 capable. Any suggestions?

Here is the cheapest one I could find.

Looks good but again its all that managment stuff puts it out of the average home owner...I guess I'll have to wait till Netgear starts to move features down to their prosumer lines...

I'm just curious as to why you feel the need to have that level (Layer 3) of control over multicast. Are you getting so much broadcast and multicast traffic that it is severely degrading your network performance? For even a power home user, a Layer 2 switch is generally more than enough, and even layer 2 switches can manage broadcast storms, without the need for the Layer 3 level of control.

Here is a cheaper one that I found, probably more in your price range, then the DLink switch, and at half the price.

          HP Procuve 2610:

I switched to using HP switches after using many Netgear switches, and found the procurve switches are easier to manage and the interface is alot more user friendly, IMO.

I have IPTV distribution in my home and each stream can consume up to 8 mbps. Now multiply that with 5 TV's and then all my media center stuff which can easily swamp a layer 2 switch. I have also been looking at newer features on the media center server realm and they are also starting to support IGMP so I want to up my technology to support this.

That shouldn't cause any problems if you have a gigabit network. i use ten Dlink gigabit switches(5port and 8 port) on my Network. I can easily run ten,15mbs, HD streams from different devices without causing any glitches on any of them. I've been running a gigabit network at home since 2001 without any issues using unmanaged switches.
Some slow 8mbs streams definitely should not cause any problems on a gigabit network.

But are any of your streams IP Multicast? If you are using point to point IP for streaming then yes a simple switch will work. Since I'm using IP Multicasting with the IGMP protocol a simple switch will not work.

Shouldn't the only limitation be the device sending out the data? I can send out identical, simultaneous HD streams to five TiVos from my TiVo PC and still have plenty of overhead to stream to multiple PCs too from the same TiVo PC.

Otherwise IP multicasting must not be very efficient if it can't handle several low speed data streams to only a few devices.

Interesting thread and I'm going to take it slightly off track (sorry Ron to hijack the thread briefly).

I've got a gig-e network but why am I only seeing 100 Mb/sec transfer rates between devices...

If anyone can answer this cause I am stumped.

                    Again, sorry for the hijack!

The maximum theoretical throughput is 125MB/s (1000 Mbps / 8 = 125 MB/s) with Gigabit speed over a single ethernet connection. The reality is that your probably more likely to be limited by the limitations of your hard drive, CPU, PCI bus, etc, than your network. You can always try teaming with a switch that has 802.3ad (Link Aggregation) to improve speeds over multiple ethernet cables. Regardless 100 MB/sec is actually good, so I wouldn't worry about it.

aaronwt, you may want to read this paper on how IGMP & IP Multicasting works. Like I said before, if a switch doesn't support the protocol natively then it broadcasts the stream out all ports..aka switchkill.

I must be lucky because I average over 650 mbps when my backups run....

Well if you don't want to dish out the money for a Layer 3 switch, you can also pick up a Layer 2 switch, just make sure it has IGMP snooping, and you should be fine. IGMP snooping works in a similar way to IGMP found in Layer 3 switches.

Is that over a ethernet network? Just curious, you running Fiber? 10GigE network??

My guess is what your seeing is MBit per second, not MB/sec so 650 MBit / 8 = 81.25 MB/sec
