    Netgear MoCA supports Vudu

I use Netgear Powerline adapters to connect my Vudu to my Ethernet router. I have few complaints about the system. However, I am interested in learning about Netgear's new line of MoCA products (NETGEAR MCAB1001) described in detail here:
    http://www.netgear.com/Products/Powe.../MCAB1001.aspx

Especially since the CES announcement that it supports Vudu.
    http://www.netgear.com/About/PressRe...20090107b.aspx

What are the advantages/disadvantages, if any, over Netgear's Powerline adapters?

Has it been tested / reviewed outside of Netgear and Vudu labs? "Google was not my friend" on this topic (although it usually is).

MoCA has a few advantages that I can see:
    • It's an industry standard, so there is a good chance that you will see consumer products in the not so distant future that will integrate it.
    • It uses shielded point to point connections. That should give you more protection from interferences (most common problem with power line adapters is that in some houses they stop working when you turn on your microwave or even your plasma TV...).
    • Most houses are already wired with coax to all the places where you might want network connectivity.
    • You don't block one of your power outlets.
    ...hope that helps.

I've been watching MoCA and HPNA and it seems like MoCA has more supporters in this space.

Its really funny that we started out with Ethernet connections that used coax (Thicknet, Thinnet), then went to CAT5, fiber, wireless, and now back to coax again. The more things change the more they stay the same I guess.

I'll pass on MoCA, and keep using my gigabit network over Cat5e.
But MoCA is a great solution for people who don't have an exisiting twisted pair network but have coax throughout the house.

Is MoCA at all similar to how cable companies currently provide Video and Data over the same coax?

Yes, just operating on a different frequency.

Sorta of but not really. MoCA is the standard that guys like Verizon use with FiOS. The cable companies simply use an RF modulation scheme where your cable data downlink gets one set of channels and your uplink another and TV channels still others. I forget how MoCA does it but it's slightly different I believe.

oh, you just continue to make me jealous (here and on AVS) ... please keep up the high standards so that I continually have a new goal and a new set of toys to consider.

                  Thanks for the information Hagen.

From the Netgear descriptions it was not clear whether I could use a splitter with it ..... or whether it had more than one Ethernet ports right on the machine.. do you know?

Also, do you have a clue why no support for DirecTv or Dish?

I'm not 100% sure about splitters, I'll check into that. To support multiple devices behind it, you should be able to use an ethernet switch...

DirecTV and Dish might be using other frequency ranges then cable/terrestrial TV. I think they also use (or at least used to use) the coax cable to control the LNB/mux using a DC signal from the set-top box to the dish/mux. That could be a problem. Although I thought I heard that someone here tried it with DirecTV. I'll have to check into that also.

                    Hagen.

                      Re: Netgear MoCA supports Vudu

Here are some more answers that I got after asking around a little bit:
                      • MoCA does layer 2 bridging, so you can put an switch behind it and that way connect multiple ethernet devices.
                      • It works if you have splitters in your coax infrastructure. But depending on how "wild" your cabling is you might loose bandwidth.
                      • It should work also with the satellite signals on the coax, but I still have no 100% confirmation. Update: should know more before the end of the week, just got a pair that I'll try at home with my directv setup.
                      Hagen.

For Satellite wouldn't it depend on what frequencies are used? DirecTV used to use frequencies above 1Ghz but with the newer 5LNB dishes don't they use a third block of frequencies that are below 1GHz now.

I'd be more interested in seeing if it worked with Directv's SWM technology.
