Movies keep stopping to buffer every five seconds ruining the experience

Two nights this week I rented movies through vudu.com and watched in my Chrome browser. The first (Hanna) one worked okay only a bit of annoyance in the middle of the movie (it began stopping to buffer frequently, but eventually stopped).

But last night I attempted to watch Scream 4, and it began stopping to buffer about half way through for every five seconds of video streamed. This ruined the watching experience.

I paused the movie and let it sit there for a long time before hitting play again hoping that would fix the problem, but it was almost like I hadn't given it any extra time to buffer. Within a few seconds it was freezing again - freeze to buffer for 3 to 5 seconds, then five seconds of video. Repeat, repeat, repeat ... I turned the movie off and went to watch something else on NetFlix, which did not stop working one time.

    Synister,

If you could send me your email address in a private message, i'll be happy to take a look at your streaming sessions. You can try using VUDU2GO, which will allow you to download the movie before you start watching it. This should solve any buffering problems you seem to be running into.

I have been having the same exact problem the last two nights and any attempt I have made has not changed the results. Buffer...Play...Buffer...WTF? Netflix and Hulu are working just fine, help please!

Just to clarify, is VUDU2GO good for rentals, or only purchases? I just rented a movie using the credit and I am not being given the option to download via this program.

I am only interested in renting - not buying.

I have been using Vudu for a couple of months now and up until the past few days it has been great but lately it has been so bad that I could not enjoy or at times completely watch the movie. I was wondering if you are able to track this problem and if so I would like to get a refund on the movies that were not streaming properly even in SD format. I do not want monetary refund but simply apply credit to my account to watch the movies again later. I also hope that you update your servers or get more because it seems that they are being over worked during the Holidays. I hope this is not an ongoing thing or I will have to start using the Playstation Network again.

Re: Movies keep stopping to buffer every five seconds ruining the experience

I am a professional multimedia specialist and an IT technician that works for a world-wide computer company. Lately, my paid rental movie watching experience has been littered with choppy video and/or "buffering" notices. I have gone trough great measures to troubleshoot hardware (my specialty), software, and the 78Mbps up/down fiber internet service (5-6Mbps min required).

I have narrowed down the options and variables to pin-point Adobe Flash
player as culprit. A recent version was updated (that I was forced to accept) and now the only way to mitigate the issue is to uninstall Google Chrome and all Flash products including Acrobat and AIR according to VuDu tech support hotline. Then, re-install Flash direct from Adobe and test first in IE8 and/or FireFox...without installing Google again. The tech said a registry sweep for Flash entries to edit is not necessary.

The Flash Control Panel indicates ActiveX ver: 11.1.102.55 and Plugin ver:
10.1.53.64. VuDu confirms these are new to there engineering team and have been untested/unsupported. The minimum version level for ActiveX is 10.3.

I will update my progress here for all...

Re: Movies keep stopping to buffer every five seconds ruining the experience

OK - here's the skinny...tested the very same movie giving me trouble in VuDu - found it on Amazon.com Instant video (before doing any Flash uninstallation and system cleaning). Amazon uses the same version of Flash. Interestingly, the video played flawlessly and never buffered once. So, narrowed down further to the new Flash 11 version is not compatible with VuDu server streaming.

The problem is server side. Today, I uninstalled Flash (goto Adobe's site and use their removal utility) without disturbing the rest of the system or software. I installed an earlier version 10.3.7 from Adobe's site (search for Flash Archives) and everything works fine now. Be sure to close all browsers when uninstallaing and re-installing the Flash version.

Finally, before starting an Internet browser, goto the Control Panel>Flash>Advanced and select "never check for updates"

You will also want to do a system cleaning by removing all temp files stored and defrag the files.

                Synister,

VUDU2GO will only allow you to download owned movies.

Re: Movies keep stopping to buffer every five seconds ruining the experience

Regarding regular VuDu channel (not VuDu2GO), you can purchase a movie download at full price or rent one to stream for a period of time (usually 24 hrs.).

The credit is only good for a rental that is streamed. Streaming to a CPU instead of a web enabled device will stream only at SD quality - not HD or HDX.

One can hardly tell the difference for most cases - especially for family that just don't care about the technical details on a movie night.

Re: Movies keep stopping to buffer every five seconds ruining the experience

Regarding my previous comment about defragmenting the HDD in a PC for use in streaming movies, I have a multimedia 'N' wireless router suitable for HDX on Fiber line feeding the PC(s) - I have to program the router administrative control to "refresh settings" during the night when I sleep each night...this deletes the cache files that build up and can cause the router to bottle-neck a bit.

I did call the mfr. engineer of the router and they did confirm that that is what the function is for when "refreshing" and they did say that heavy use of the router for streaming media should have the option switched on daily.

Check your router admin controls to see if you have this setting as well and enable daily if so.

Each application run at different bit rates. If you are below 1mb in available bandwidth you will buffer with VUDU. Please give us a call at (888)554-VUDU so we can take a look at what happened.

I'm having the same problem, just recently. Vudu needs to solve the problem at their end. I have no problem streaming movies from any other source on the computer except for Vudu. Even with 3 green bars it buffers every few seconds. As for downloading movies, the download speed is atrocious. It takes over 2 1/2 hours to download a typical movie!
