    No 1080i Support?!

    Hi All,

We just received our Vudu box today and my wife and me are excited about renting movies without having to drive to the video store. I heard so many positive comments from folks on-line and was looking forward to using Vudu.

Unfortunately, we were both disappointed with the box and it's lack of support for 1080i over component connection. Our TV is a 57" 1080i Sony model that does not have HDMI. My wife love HD content as much as I do and so both of us were very disappointed. I called tech support earlier tonight and they said that the highest resolution that we will get out of the box over component is 480P. Wow! What a bummer!

We currently have our AppleTV sitting next to the Vudu box and AppleTV definitely supports 1080i over component connection. I am truely disappointed that Vudu cannot provide the higher resolution that Apple easily does on the AppleTV.

We will be returning the box within the 30 days trial period and again, we are both very disappointed.

    Re: No 1080i Support?!

Read this thread - http://forum.vudu.com/showthread.php?t=2027 to understand the technical/political situation.

Wake up and read the specs on Apple TV http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html and you'll see that you are mistaken. The maximum resolution from Apple TV for rented content is 720p if/when they deliver HD content. All of their SD rental movies are in 480 resolution.

You have been misled by Apple into thinking they are giving you 1080 content - they are not, and can not deliver 1080 content on that hardware, its just not possible.

      Nded,

I appreciate your point but the fact is that there are people out there that have older HD sets (two of my buddies included) with component connections only. I was going to try Vudu out first and let them know how things look. My wife and I were excited about Vudu and now very disappointed.

Maybe AppleTV will not do 1080 but I would think that 720p will still be an improvement over 480p (correct me if I am wrong here). At least this is obvious to us: all the menus on AppleTV looks a lot sharper than what I get from Vudu and all the preview/trailers of movies are better looking also. Have you looked at the menus on Vudu under 480i/p? They look terrible compared to AppleTV. I am just giving one example of picture quality over component connection.

Again, we would love to keep Vudu but the idea of no HD to rent is a deal killer.

      Thanks for your input.

        Re: No 1080i Support?!

I understand your situation, but menus are not why you are watching movies. Everything you can currently rent from Apple is 480 resolution. Apple has not yet, and may never be able to deliver HD content over component (see the Apple TV thread in this forum). The studios are cracking down on this and requiring HDMI connections. If you ultimately decide to walk away from Vudu, you are walking away from instant delivery of all content (another thing ATV doesn't deliver). If you and your wife are serious about the video resolution being your critical factor you will eventually retire/relocate that older TV and move up to an HDMI TV so you can participate in the future.

          Re: No 1080i Support?!

At present, AppleTV delivers up to 1080i over component video. I know because I have one. The $50,000 question is will HD content be supported in 720p (or converted to 1080i) over the component connection. We shall see.

With Vudu, the studios would not agree to allowing this. It is allowed on HDMI only where you have HDCP for copy protection. Nearly all upconverting DVD players are this way as well as HD-DVD and BluRay players (AFAIK). Yes, it shafts people with component only sets but blame that on the content owners.

Vudu is a great product and perhaps it's a good idea to hang onto it and eventually upgrade your projector. They've come down a lot in price these days...

But the SD movie content is only 480 resolution (read the Apple TV specs again). They may let you show your personal pictures/videos in higher resolution, but not the commercial content. This is being overlooked by all the so called experts.

Of course. Actually, it's like the Vudu - the 480p content is upconverted to 720p or 1080i. But what will happen with the HD content? I don't know. I'll be sure to let everyone know as I have my ATV hooked up by component.

                Re: No 1080i Support?!

I think most people would be fine if HDMI requirement was specified explicitly. This way people will know what they are getting into and not come away disappointed as the OP.

Out of curiosity, I went through the Vudu's site again and I couldn't find a place which would specify that HDMI is required for HD content. Even FAQ page "Does VUDU have high defintion (HD) content?" doesn't mention HDMI requirement. Now, HD content was added just a few days ago, so perhaps this is on oversight.

My Directv receiver as well as other video equipment I own support HD formats through either component or hdmi (but not composite or s-video). So I guess I was a little surprised to see this too.

I only use hdmi now days, so I never noticed.

Thanks for all the posts. In the end, we assumed that HD content would be available over component. As Rusdude noted, we did not find specific info stating no HD support over component. Our own fault for assuming.

I agree this isn't posted easily for people to find. It should be noted.

I think the assumption is that just about every other video player out there does not support HD resolutions over component video.

We'll see if we can get this added to the spec/faq.

                        Re: No 1080i Support?!

Hmm. I just tried the component dongle on my 360 that I rented Transformers HD last night. It does allow 1080i output over component for playback. I can't test 1080P output since that set only accepts 1080P over HDMI and the TV I have that accepts 1080P over component is in another room.

But that does show that the Xbox 360 allows 1080i output over component for the Transformers HD rental. If the Xbox 360 is allowed to do it I would think other providers should be allowed to do it. But you never know. I guess it's whatever is in the agreement they signed with the studios.

                          Re: No 1080i Support?!

I have an AppleTV and a Vudu and like both. I do think it is weak that Vudu cannot support 720p over the component cables but luckily I have HDMI on both my TVs. I do prefer menus in better than 480p as well. Menus are definitely part of the experience.

My biggest problem with Vudu right now is the lack of wireless internet. I have a brand new Sony XBR5 and cannot get a wired port anywhere near the TV. I am forced to rent upstair and move the box. I don't blame Vudu for not including wireless, but is a current huge hurdle for me.

You should consider the 2nd generation power line adapters. They work very well.

My HD directv receiver (HR20) outputs 1080i over the component cables. I can get all the HD pay channels and rent HD movies.
