Re: High Definition HD Content - or lack there of?

Sorry let me clarify that...I did see the FAQ.

In the short term you will gain lots of customers by getting the HD content in now.

In the long term those promises of USB drives will keep them because the HD data storage requirements are huge when that capability arrives.

Get HD content, but USB drive capability gets delayed for too long, you will eventually lose those customers as well.

Agreed. But please understand that the capability for HD content is not an issue with the box or the capabilities of the box. As mentioned in the business week article on the Vudu today: "Vudu can show high-definition movies, too, but so far the studios have not made any available."

So please, the problem is where it always lies: THE STUDIOS. Vudu can't control that. All they can do is try to get the content.

My understanding is that this is also 'off the shelf' hardware - not 'buy at Vudu price' hardware, either. So find the best deal on whatever size drive (in this case, size DOES matter) and really push this box to the limit! The external ability is secondary to getting the product out, but will be available in the very near future.

Well that's a moot point, whether it's not provided by VUDU or the studios won't give it up is the same to the customer, its not available.

It is my fervent hope that the content becomes available....this would then be an awesome system, but that's the decision point for me. If by Christmas there is no HD content, I buy a dual Blu-Ray/HD player and will wish you the best...

Well it looks like your choice has been made. Since VUDU/Studios cannot provide the content you are looking for on the VUDU platform then you choose to spend your dollars else ware. Its call capitalism. The consumer votes with their dollars on who wins and loses.

The discussion going on here is like saying I really like that Ford 500 but I want the Cadillac telematics system instead. Well Ford cannot do this until GM licenses the telematics to Ford. Whats a consumer to do?

Well, if you want to purchase a Blue Ray and get HD movies from just some studios - go for it. If you want to purchase an HD DVD and get HD movies from just some studios - go for it.

If you want to get up from your couch, walk over to your shelf that holds the DVDs, look for the title you want, walk over to the AV center, open the DVD case, open the DVD player and put the disk in - then go for it.

If you want to rent HD content or any content by standing in line at Blockbuster on Friday or Saturday night - go for it.

If you want to wait for DVDs to come in the mail from Netflix - go for it.

This sounds like what you want to do.

If you want to sit on your couch, have over 5000 movies at your finger tips available for immediate rental or purchase and all you have to do is move your thumb - then you have a Vudu.

If you want to wait patiently for HD movies from all studios that are playable on a single device then you have a Vudu. The HD movies will certainly come. The box is made for it.

So the choice is yours. Stick with a paradigm developed over 25 years ago with the advent of the CD player or start anew with a paradigm that is due to rocket out of the gate in another week or so.

              I'm staying with my Vudu...

LOL...no that's not what I want to do, or did you not read into my comments before you blasted me?!

If VUDU fails on HD content I think your going to have a meltdown....

If they even start to get the content then it's mine all mine!...muhahaha..sorry I digress. maybe I'll turn in my logitech Harmony 1000 remote and use all 10 remotes I put in a box...since you think I am falling back into getting my lazy butt off the couch?

I will buy this system when HD comes on it...period.

If I were you, I'd go ahead and clear out a 12"x12" space on your AV rack now, cause you're going to be owning a Vudu real soon, and I know you'll be true to your word.

P.S. Jon's been a little grumpy lately due to a nagging problem with an HDMI switch.

No problem, we are looking forward to several years of mental sparring over which movies look and sound the best. It's going to be a good time.

I wasn't really trying to blast you. Sorry if it came off a little strong. It just sounded like if Vudu wasn't going to have HD by Christmas then you'd just forget the whole idea and go BlueRay or HD-DVD.

If VUDU fails on HD content I think your going to have a meltdown....
Well, yeah I would. I get very frustrated sometimes! But given what I know about the box and about Vudu, I am sure HD will come unless the studios really have their head where the sun don't shine!

maybe I'll turn in my logitech Harmony 1000 remote and use all 10 remotes I put in a box...since you think I am falling back into getting my lazy butt off the couch?
Well, sadly at this point, you'll have to use the Vudu remote w/your Harmony. Given the Vudu is RF only right now, you have no choice. It's my biggest gripe (and everyone knows it too! ). The box does have USB ports on it so perhaps if enough people ask for support for an external IR dongle over USB it can happen..Vudu is very responsive to customers and wants customers to provide feedback and make feature requests. At this early game, early adopters like you have a lot of influence over where the product goes in the future..

I will buy this system when HD comes on it...period.

I see. Well, let's just hope we can come back on here soon and say, "We have HD!!!"

It comes out this week right? I was actually going through my DVD Library and thinking how nice it would be to cut it down a bit.

Yes, it is supposed to start shipping sometime this week.

Worse than getting my backside off the couch is the endless array of previews and menus and more previews and warnings that you have to sift through on DVDs. Doesn't happen with Vudu!
