    The Brave One

Just finished watching The Brave One with my wife.

The picture quality was very good. The surround sound was very good. The aspect ratio was correct and filled my HD screen properly. The movie was a current release that we hadn't seen yet, and the movie itself was not half bad.

I could not tell that it wasn't a DVD that I would get from Netflix.

    Good job Vudu, goodbye Netflix!

What do you mean by the aspect ratio being correct and filling the screen? Most movies, if they have the correct aspect ratio, shoudn't fill the screen since most movies are at an aspect ratio higher than the 1.78:1(16:9) ratio that HD sets have.

I'm finding interesting looking movies on Vudu I'd never look at anywhere else. Skinwalkers is one that I've looked at the preview on (it's one of the HD films). If I looked at the poster or jacket, it turned me off. But I watched the preview. It actually looks good. So I might rent it at some point.

On Directv they advertise some of their movies as widescreen. When you download it and watch it, it's really 4:3 with letter boxing. So it doesn't fill the entire screen unless you use your tv to zoom or strech.

With Vudu Widescreen, although this particular movie is letter boxed, it fills my 16:9 HD screen from left to right, just like a rented DVD would.

I said this before, but I think it would also be nice if Vudu would change their movie decriptions for movies that say "Full Screen" to something else that more clearly states that they really mean a 4:3 aspect ratio (whether it's letter boxed or not) instead of 16:9. But don't go overboard and call it anamorphic whatever, because that's just as confusing.

Another thing I mean about correct aspect ratio is that some HD channels on Directv strech their SD content to fill the screen. Everyone calls it "Strech O Vision" because the picture is distored from it's original aspect ratio, and it's "VERY" annoying to watch. To make things worse because it's broadcast in HD I cannot change my TV to view it any other way than the way they broadcast it. There's been so many complaints about Strech O Vision that a lot of channels are going back to broadcasting the SD content in 4:3 with sidebars. You'll see this alot on ESPN HD with sports repalys that are in SD format.

Hope that conveys my meaning well.

        Regards

The original aspect ratio of "The Brave One" is 2.35:1 so there should be black bars presented above and below during the presentation if you are seeing the entire content. If the black bars are missing it would either be stretched vertically, which would distort the picture, or it is zoomed in to fill a 16:9(1.78:1) ratio TV which would be cutting off at least a third of the picture.

Yes the movie was letter boxed (black bars above and below). But what I mean is that the movie filled the screen from left to right instead of letterboxed 4:3 which has bars on top, bottom and on the left and right. A letterboxed 4:3 movie looks like a postage stamp picture on my tv and this was not the case with "The Brave One" (which made me happy!)

I watched skinwalkers HD last night. Nothing really great but it was an OK rental.

Although off-topic, the wife and I also enjoyed and recommend The Brave One. Looks like Jodie Foster had some facial work done. I might not had recongized her if it wasn't for her voice...
