Re: HD - which one would you want to see 1st?

Action and Sci-Fi are the ones really needed in HD. Films like Lord of the Rings, StarTrek, Star Wars, etc. would be awesome in HD. Same goes for Action movies. Anything with a large amount of special effects would be great.

As for the other categories, yeah, they'd be nice, but to me, I really want a movie to have the visual characteristics that would make it pop in HD. I can't see how a movie like The Breakfast Club would have any advantage in HD over SD. Visually it just isn't there...

I was thinking the same thing as Jon, Sci-Fi and Action both can really rock in HD.

I agree with the above and since I enjoy the Action genre over SciFi, it got my vote.

Not at present. HD negotiations are still in process. I can say I have seen HD on the box and it looks phenomenal. If you want to see a really good movie showing how good the box really is, rent 300. It is not in HD, but I don't know how HD could be any better.

I'd like romantic comedies to be in HD . . .

Okay, okay, I really want the sci-fi too.

                      TOS?

Here's the funny aspect of stuff going on HD and people thinking it's in HD...It's not. All of the source material for StarTrek, particularly TOS, was filmed in nowhere near HD quality. All putting it on HD-DVD does is give the illusion that the content is in HD...

Jon you are wrong here...film has a higher resolution that HD since it was done with a chemical reaction not scan lines on video tape. They have gone back to the original films and remastered them. Also they improved the special effects.

If you watch Star Trek on u26 on the weekend they are already playing the re-done start trek episodes. You can actually see the coffee stain on Spock's uniform in one of the episodes as he walks down a coradore....its great to see the mistakes were left in.

Film in general yes - I'd agree with. But film from the 60's? Are you sure that film technology from 1967 is better than HD today?

Yes I am sure....Movies and TV in the 60 all the way up to today are mostly shot on film, not video. Some of the cheesier TV shows today are shot directly to video but go back a couple of years and they all were doing film.

Film has a much greater resolution than video. It has billions of silver halide crystals on each frame. This provides much more detail than HD can provide since it exceeds the pixel count of a HD frame. Yes film does have some interesting characteristics. Since we are dealing with crystals vs. pixels there may be a bit of grain since crystals are not perfectly aligned like a CCD in a camcorder.
