Vudu has HDX, which I love, and I hope they continue chugging right along. Why pay for a 720p movie on ATV, when I can't get a high bitrate 1080p movie on Vudu.

I still have two boxes, with the non HDX streaming SW because I prefer to just download them ahead of time.

netflix is moving slowly into our domain..... we need more vigilance from management...

How about a monthly subscription based service?

Well it looks like beginning on the 18th those of us with PS3's will be able to stream Netflix at 1080p and 5.1 audio. I have been a Vudu user since near the beginning and we still watch it frequently. Unfortunately, we still get the buffering problem with the new Brazil. We have set the box up in the DMZ as suggested and we have the 15/5 FIOS service. It will be interesting to see if we have buffering with Netflix as well. I do miss some of the stuff in the Vudu Labs that they didn't carry over to Brazil. Up to very recently Vudu has been the leader. I hope they stay up with or ahead of the pack.

I find it strange you are having issues streaming. I am able to get 1 bar HDX streaming without issue, and that's a BX100 on DSL that tests at 5200 mbps down. It's also not on wireless, but connected via ethernet by a powerline adapter.

Netflix up to this point has been unimpressive to me. The HD they offer, on a larger screen has just not looked good. My big draw to Vudu is HDX, and there is not one 1080p source Ive seen yet, other than Blu-ray that looks equal or better.

I agree with the Elway, I have a large screen projection system and HDX is still the best HD video quality out there(streaming, that is)......I still think the encode of Avatar was top notch. It was the best I've seen on VUDU....I could see little difference between it and a BD

I find it interesting about the hard drive situation.....I will monitor these forums for any developments......

Re: Vudu will lose to Apple TV and Netflix if they continue being complacent...

A lot of this does come down to screen size, and it's not to be a braggart. I go round and round with folks all the time about ESPN. I have Directv, which sends thru a pretty good signal, but since I hit the 50"+ mark, ESPN has really gone down hill. Many folks will say it looks fine from their position, but it comes down to screen size. I regularly put my 32" next to my 58", to watch two games at a time, and the 32" will sometimes appear to look better. The compression artifacts ESPN has, do not show on the 32".

Where I'm headed with this is, even on my 58", I see NO issues with HDX. Now, Amazon VOD 1080i downloads look pretty darn good (I use it for TV shows in HD), but they are still soft compared to HDX. I've read about Apples 720p, and Im not interested with my setup.

I have noticed on some HDX titles there is some shimmering, particularly when there is a shot showing the sky.....No, it's not about being a braggart, but some of us are fortunate enough to have large-screen systems, and the screen size DOES expose a streaming service's shortcomings......I always felt VUDU was designed to provide great HD quality for even high-end systems....I hope they don't prove me wrong.....If they make the quality good enough to be shown on a large-screen projection system, those with smaller screens will benefit too......It will be interesting to see in which direction VUDU will go.....rental and electronic sell-thru(which is what I want), or subscription...maybe a combination of both...

Seems like currently, HDX is in direct competition with HD PPV on like Directv, which is exactly the same price and 1080p (not as good as HDX, but pretty darn good). I think as long as they do well at $6, they would have no reason to change. From my understanding, Directv 1080p Cinema is doing well.

Re: Vudu will lose to Apple TV and Netflix if they continue being complacent...

i really agree with the title of this thread. i have atv and vudu and i find that i ONLY use vudu for hdx movies. we rent and buy lots of content on atv because it is such a good interface and there is so much content. When i browse movies there is ALWAYS a preview available. this alone is enough to make me start there. we get tv seasons and rip dvd's to atv. if i find a cool movie that i want to watch i will check to see if vudu has it and if i have time i download it in hdx. i DO NOT want a streaming interface that does not buffer ahead. i would rather drive to blockbuster than have the thing glitching.

here is the issue for vudu. i am probably somewhat typical except that i REALLY care about HDX quality for movies. i have a 12' wide screen with an anamorphic lense so i feel that i can truly see the difference. i suspect that 95% of the world watching on a 42" flat screen would think 720P atv looks great. let's face it, most of us vudu forum posters are more videophile than average. this means that sadly ATV has the right formula for the unwashed masses.

Re: Vudu will lose to Apple TV and Netflix if they continue being complacent...

The one thing I do not like about Apple is everything is proprietary......You have to buy Apple-this and Apple-that in order to comply, I-Tunes is a requirement....Also, I don't know if 720P is going to remain competitive in the long run because even Netflix is going 1080P......Even Steve Jobs said that ATV is a "hobby".......

I have criticized what VUDU has done in the past, but I see some serious movement from them lately....i.e, the various price points for buying and renting movies.....I've seen purchases offered as low as 4.99, with others at varying price points(7.50, 9.99, 14.99, 19.99 for SD). Rentals as low as 2.00.......HDX purchases as low as 11.50(mainly independents) Disney is the only major studio that consistently offers HD films for sale and I buy them from time to time...They are comparable in price to a Blu-ray disc(should be lower), but I commend them for their support of digital HD sell-thru......

The quality of the streaming has improved greatly, I no longer have buffering issues on my VUDU box.....There have been tweaks to the interface on the box and on their website......I can order a movie on the website, then play it from my box later.....All the special offers( Deals under 10.00, Steals under 5.00, 2.00 for 2 days) show me that VUDU is serious about competing in the digital distribution domain....Granted, portability is an issue, but ATV only plays on IPhones, IPads, and IPods

These are just some of the changes I noticed that have been made lately to improve the VUDU service....I hope one day VUDU embeds their service on other MFG set-tops, i.e., Tivo, WD-TV, Popbox, or Popcorn Hour.........

I agree with the comments on Apple, which I why I sometimes have an issue with them. I own an iPod 360gb, and will be getting an iPad on Monday, for home internet usage, and general goofing off. I currently download Amazon VOD HD shows on the TiVo, but I'll prob start watching them on the iPod, because many are 99 cents in HD vs $2.99.

Also, Directv is in the works with something, that'll hopefully allow you to move DVR's programs to a mobile device, for watching. I can only hope Directv would make the iPad one of those devices.

I see Vudu, for my use, as my Movie rental service. I've stopped going to the movies, and want to watch them before buying. HDX works perfectly here, and $6 is a drop in the bucket. I ONLY use BB/Nflix now for TV series rentals, like True Blood.

I hear ya, Elway, we all have different needs when it comes to our entertainment choices...Fortunately, out of all the movies I have purchased on VUDU, very few have been duds(and at 4.99 for catalog titles and at 9.99 for recent titles, it's worth searching)......I tend to buy already proven films, some via the Criterion Collection, Academy Award winners, timeless classics that I know about and foreign films.........

I've thought about purchasing, but their model just doesn't appeal to me. I used to buy more, but many of the movies now just arent worth it. I basically buy a lot of the oldies I know I like (Alien Quadrilogy and Back to the Future Set to name some recent examples), and then rent ALL of the new stuff. If I like what I see, I'll monitor it on Amazon and pick it up when it hits the $15 or so range (got Casino Royale recently $12 )

I have then all. ATV is good in that thru itunes you have a hard copy you can xfer and play on the other apple devices. VUDU is great in that you can now own for as little as $5 and they have some really hard to find movies like the old TERMINAL MAN and PARENTS (two of my favs). I too am worried about collecting a lot of vudu purchases then having vudu go belly up. Thats exactly what happened to wal-marts movie program they once offered a long time ago. Called walmart movie downloads, walmart closed it down and if your movie content rights got messed up (as it always did), walmart wasn't there to fix it. So bye bye purchases.
As to 720p vs ??? I think 720 looks just fine for 99% most people. We're getting too picky about 720 vs 1080 for most people to even see a difference with your average 42" HDTV. And I believe if the new 3D tv catches on (doubtful...), those 3D movies are all in 720P ???

I like vudu but might add the vudu "box" to have a hard drive. I like ATV cause I can play movies on ipad and iphone also, and have a hard copy. Vudu's media pricing and available content is so far a huge plus for them. But with all this media streaming war going on you have to be nervous.

Well, The Alien and Back to the Future series are coming to VUDU, but they will not be available to own in Hi-Def formats......I will not buy them in SD, those movies definitely would be worth buying in HDX, one thing I would like to see is the ability to sort films via price point, since now it seems that prices do vary so much..... I tend to look at my VUDU box as a digital library, same as all the BD's ,and HD-DVD's I have, except with VUDU I get right to the movie, none of the forced trailers, ads and other garbage that is on some discs....It's funny, I haven't used my combo-player in a year, lol...........You are so right about the crappy movies released lately, a lot of 3D stuff, but people still go to the theaters to see them........Makes ya wonder, doesn't it?
