Start download using web or iPhone interface

Before the final Brazil release, I used to order rentals for the Vudu Box at my weekend house on the web and they would be downloaded when I arrived. The internet connection there is slow and there is no possibility of streaming. Now I can order movies on the web, but I cannot start the download until I arrive. Am I missing something that would allow me to start the download without being in front of the box? Could you re-instate that capability either for the web interface or the iPhone app?

i have the same issue. i called tech support about something else and asked them while i was on the phone and they said the iphone app can't initiate a download. kind of makes it useless since there is no reason to rent a streamed video ahead of time. maybe they will fix this?

Same here. Didn't start downloading until I went and manually told it to start downloading (the button text has now changed to "Manage Download" - I don't recall the original button text prior to clicking). (Edit: The button text is: "Add SD For Download", between "Watch SD" and "Rate/Share" for the purchased/rented movie).

This can't possibly be the expected behavior. Their iPhone app page states:
"After finding something that suits your mood, rent or purchase the movie using your VUDU account and it will be downloaded to your VUDU box automatically, ready for you to watch it at your leisure."
      http://www.vudu.com/product_iphone.html

I very recently underwent the major upgrade (I'm using the original Vudu device), so I'm hoping this is just a one-time quirk ("sensing" my network, etc.).

yeah I think that was written before the Brazil release. I agree with you, the iPhone app is more or less useless now that you cannot initiate a download. I don't think this caused much buzz on the boards at first because of the hard drive issue. Now that that has been corrected, I think more and more people will run into the usability issue with the web and iPhone interfaces.

Re: Start download using web or iPhone interface

OK, here's the acceptance test for this bug.
I really gave the Vudu device the benefit of the doubt in this test:
          a) purchased, rather than rented, since the purchase is forever, not just streamed once.
          b) left the Vudu device on (both lights green).
          c) no data rate caps (set to the highest setting - 15.0Mbps)
          d) no traffic on LAN + all PCs/game consoles disconnected.
          e) empty hard drive (233 GB available)

          Here's the test.

          1. "Turned On" the Vudu-branded set-top device (both lights green). This is not a third-party device with Vudu slapped onto it. This is THE Vudu device: Vudu BX100. Verified connectivity. Verified that both lights are green.
          2. Using the iPhone app, purchased an SD movie. (His Girl Friday, in my case - movie shouldn't matter.) iPhone app confirmed the purchase.
          3. Wait 12 hours.
          4. Expected outcome: Movie fully downloaded to the Vudu device, and ready to play, without buffering. (Optional: Movie listed in My Downloads > Manage Downloads as Complete).
Actual outcome: Movie not downloaded. Movie not listed in My Downloads > Manage Downloads at all. Instead, user has the option to begin the download manually via the "Add SD For Download" button.

@raaurora: I'm not familiar with the hard drive issue that you mentioned, so I can't say "I completely agree!!" to you. Yet.
