    Anyone else deleted content??

I'm just curious how many of you have actually maxed out your Hard Disk Drive in your VUDU box, and had content deleted by VUDU directly through their customer service line or directly yourself though the new 1.3 firmware??

Am I only one who is concerned that content you own is no longer yours, but in fact was nothing more than "leased" to you?

On purchased content, the content is not "leased" but you own the "Copyright" to play the movie on your VUDU. Archiving does exactly what it says. Your "Copyrighted" copy is stored in the VUDU's cloud. It stays in the "My Movies" list.

Now if you permanently delete content it's the same as taking a DVD and throwing it in the trash. Its gone for good and you would have to re-purchase it. In this case it is removed from "My Movies".

IANAL, but I would think a more accurate statement for purchased content is that you own a license to play the movie on your Vudu.

Same goes for physical DVDs, you do not own the content. Instead the physical DVD is your license which gives you limited rights to play the included content.

For some reason the major studios feel that if you decide to delete the licensed content from your Vudu, you're also destroying your license. If the license is embedded in the file, then it matches the DVD example and I might agree, but if it's stored separately on your Vudu or on Vudu's servers somewhere I find this quite a leap...

        Re: Anyone else deleted content??

It appears to be a movie by movie basis for what is archivable and what can only be deleted. It does not appear to be an "Independent" vs. "Major" thing like the 48 vs. 24 hour rental period. There are major studio movies like "Total Recall" that can be archived.

Given the complex nature of digital rights and the headaches involved in licensing content (as per my other posts), I'm not surprised at this sort of thing. It's extremely consumer unfriendly and it's Hollywood shooting themselves in the foot on this. I've stated elsewhere that the most secure non-piratable way of a movie to be delivered is to have the entire movie exist in pieces scattered across a cloud of devices. If no single device has the entire movie on it, there's no way to de-encrypt that device and make a digital copy. Still, for some reason, it is seen differently.

The good news is that TV shows are all 100% archivable. AFAIK, purchasing a lot of TV shows will quickly fill up your box. Now, the box needs some sort of storage meter so you know when to archive or how much...

I agree a storage meter is sorely needed.

Is it really? I mean, it's the kind of thing that many (if not most) of the customers will never need. And those that need to archive content won't need to worry about it until they actually hit a limit.

I think a meter would make people think there's some need for disk management when there usually isn't. On my DVR, it's important because things may not record if it fills up. But here, the process is more sequential.

I guess I'm never against showing more info, but I would bury it in with the rest of the technical info.

Does this "central archiving" now mean that USB storage devices will be delayed?

External storage is in development. I can't say a lot about it but it is being worked on. I don't know where it fits into the software roadmap. It's not that this has obviated the need for external storage...

Totally agreed. If I've got a nice fast internet connection, in most cases there's virtually no difference to me playing back a title that I've "archived" as opposed to one that's fully downloaded (like the first couple of Family Guy seasons I'm working through).

However, since there are going to be titles that can't be archived, storage upgrades would still be useful.

I'm still of the opinion that distributed storage across the Vudu network of boxes would be a better and more secure method for storing content securely and prevent piracy...

If we could just simply archive everything, there'd be no need for external storage...

I should rephrase. It sorely needed for me. Funny thing is is that I asumed that if a meter were on the box that it would be in the buried in the technical info. That way it would be out of sight for those that don't care to see but accessible to those of us that like to keep tabs on how much space is left on the box before purchasing or renting more movies.

With not all movies having the option of being archived and external storage not implemented I will be wary in purchasing movies. I don't want the box to fill up and then run accross something I want to watch only to not be able to because I refuse to pay twice for the same movie.

Without a meter, external Hard drive support, or the ability to archive all movies Vudu will have to be a rental only box for me.

Am I thinking correctly that Vudu is going to work to expand archiveable content just like they are expanding their catalog? Meaning, just because something is not archiveable right now, it might become so down the road when licensing issues will be worked out.

That seems to be a reasonable deduction. When did you start tapering off of your medications?

The question is how many movies have you purchased? The box will hold approximately 50 SD movies (HD movies can't really be purchased at this point). So if you are no where near that number, go ahead and purchase. Archive any TV shows so that you always stay ahead of the game...

And I *believe* that content purchased before archiving became available is still available for archiving. So that as old titles get new rights, your previously purchased content assumes those rights.
