Re: A trip into your past

    Hilarious!! But all too true.

My wife inherited an AM/FM Turntable combo from one of her realatives, complete with a collection of vinyl. Everything worked but the needle was broken. So she went online an ordered a new one the other day. Of course she couldn't figure out how to change it, so she dragged me into doing it.

I did it (of course), but without kicking and screaming and telling her she was out of her feak'n mind.

As a reward for fixing it, I now have to suffer through albums of Dung Ho blowing tiny bubbles.

Pfff... I grew up without a telephone and having to watch a small B&W TV with two channels. Now THAT was tough.

P.S. Anyway, it's a funny skit. I get Onion on my TiVo through TiVoCast

Do you mean AMERICAN call center? As in, "I can't believe there was a time when call centers were not outsourced" *

          * -- from what I read, there has been a move to bring some call centers back to the U.S. though b/c many customers aren't happy.

You are correct that a lot of the support centers are moving from the clueless overseas market to those markets who understand North American culture. What I mean buy this is that now Canada and some European countries can host support since they understand the average American.

My company deals with a lot of call centers and the issues they face. We don't have a group that deals with off-shoring but we do deal with customer retention and experience. All I can say is that customer experience of a support call going to a representative that can't go beyond a "script" is in the dumps with most companies. We teach companies how to go beyond a "script and not just number of calls handled per hour.

That's totally untrue, none of them speak Espanol or Hand Jive. In the next few years I'm going to qualify for minority benefits.

One interesting fact -- when I called Sprint a week ago, the CSR actually included her location in the little intro speech they make. I thought it was curious.

Computer industry is the one where I hate scripts the most. I'm sure they need them for 95% of the users, but if I call about an issue, you best believe I went above & beyond rebooting it! Even our company's IT support is similar, but the only reason I ever have to call them is to do stuff that requires admin permissions (gotta love 'em locked down corporate PCs!).

I haven't worked within our call center operations group in about 2 years but they have made some significant strides in understanding customer defection and retention. We even have patents for the modeling algorithms that are used.

Sprint is really bleeding customers right now and they are working hard to make sure the support experience is top notch.

Where I am working now most of their internal support is in Northern Ireland. But every person had to have at lease two weeks in the states working with a product expert. Their customer support is actually U.S. based and their attempts to off-shore it have failed due to cultural issues. I was one of three that had to go off-shore to examine the impacts of these efforts.
