Offline playback on the old Vudu Box

So I have the old Vudu Box (BX250, I think) which is still going strong. I've hit a problem however trying to play back a movie in a room with no internet connection.

If I just pull the Ethernet cable out once it's all ready booted, the software drops back to an error screen ("Could not connect...", that sort of thing) with three user input options: Enter (to try again), Play (to configure the network) and Back (for offline viewing). I press back and I get a list of purchased movies (stored on the box) which I can watch.

So, happy with the initial test, I move the box to a second room. Remember, no Ethernet here so I have to boot it without an internet connection. It boots to an error screen with the same message and options except they now don't work. Well, enter works (to retry for a connections) but that's no use to me. I can't get to the offline movie list, pressing back has no effect.

I get an "Error code 6: Could not resolve host" message at the broken screen if that helps (by broken I mean it wont respond to 'back' or 'play').

Is this a known software bug? If so is there a workaround?

I doubt it's a bug. It's probably there by design, to ensure the box is in an area where Vudu is licensed.

Not sure I believe that, it kind of defeats the point of ownership and offline playback.

It was just a guess. I have a device (unrelated to streaming video) that will not work until it knows where it is. With licensing being so restrictive for movies, I think my guess was reasonable. DVDs are sold according to region, and will not play on an out of region player. I figured maybe even Vudu content might be restricted by region, too.

Currently other devices with HDD download support (other than the PC download app) do require a connection to play movies. The VUDU STB is a bit of a special legacy case since that was a feature of the original P2P service...

Hey Jake, is the file format of the downloaded movies I have in the CFF format that UV supports?

No, they aren't... nothing "user accessible".

As far as CFF downloads... no news now, but eventually it will be required of all retailers selling UV content.

Could anyone tell me if any of the current boxes (hopefully HD) support offline viewing (i.e. VUDU to go)? When I travel I'd like to take them with me but streaming typically is not possible with hotel connections.. Plus, if I am traveling with the kids, they could watch something while in the van.

I don't believe there are any 'current' boxes, Vudu went embedded only some time back. You can still find the set boxes they used to produce for sale if you look in the right places, however (they were always HD).

As for offline playback, it was confirmed in the thread that it should be a supported feature (no reason why it shouldn't be, no license check is needed - the movies are encoded on the hard drive and locked to the physical box once downloaded).

The problem I have right now can only be resolved (for me) by using a wifi dongle (and being in range of a working wifi signal). This tricks the box into booting properly and you are then free to remove the Ethernet and watch stored content offline. Vudu support have been good about supporting issue so far but they are not always able to reproduce it.

It's tough to debug something that you can't reproduce but the flip side of this is that not every box necessarily has this problem. Might be interesting to see if others on the forum can boot without any internet plugged in and still get the offline playback screen....

Even though I no longer use my VUDU boxes(I now have the WD Live Hub), I could watch my films in offline mode.....The UI was very basic, just a list of the films I could pick from....I remember this because I used to watch Avatar a number of times offline...P.S. I cannot watch offline with the Hub though.....

Not to threadjack, but I have the original bx100, and was tihnking of getting the wd tv live hub. How is the vudu experience on the hub? Can you hvae it download rentals? I _hate_ getting into a movie and then hitting buffering. It was one of the great things to be able to download on the bx100 and just watch a movie straight through.
