Re: feature request: sd to hdx upgrade

As a Vudu customer, this feature would make me feel like my purchases were more "future proof". I know we aren't there yet, but 4k resolution looks to be on the horizon.

If Vudu allows for upgrading from SD to HD to HDX, I will be more reassured that they will also allow for HDX to be upgraded to whatever comes next (HD4X? ). If I feel like my digital movies are more able to evolve than my physical media, I will stop physical purchases altogether.

So, I'm in. Count me as a plus 1. This would be a great feature and a benefit to both Vudu and its customer base.

Just think Vudu, if you institute this type of policy you would have a huge one-up over iTunes...that alone should be worth it!

Re: feature request: sd to hdx upgrade

                      +1 for me as well.

I've got many, many SD & HD movies I would pay to upgrade to HDX. Likewise there are SD movies I have not bought that I would buy if I felt that it might be offered in HD or HDX in the future and I could pay some sort of difference instead of buying outright again. The same goes for upgrading to 3D versions as they became available.

That said I understand that Vudu may not be able to simply charge the "difference" between two versions since they may have to pay the studio each time a "version" not a "title" is sold to one person. If so the base fee to the studio could be high enough that Vudu might not be able to upgrade for only the difference, though less then an outright purchase again.

                      IE example:
Studio charges Vudu $10 for SD and $14 for HD.
If Vudu charges us $12 and $16 respective and they only charge us the (retail) difference to upgrade $4 ($16-12) then Vudu loose money since they have to pay the studio $14 for the second version. So Vudu looses $10 ($4-14) to upgrade us.

As you can see, depending on how much and how the studios charge Vudu AND how much Vudu charges us there might be no way to offer us an upgrade from one digital version to a higher quality digital version.

Just because some of the studios are offering this on some of their titles for converting physical discs to digital copies doesn't mean they or Vudu can offer us digital upgrades. It doesn't benefit the studios.

What does benefit the studios is to eliminate physical discs which can be resold by the consumer, copied, played on physical machines that don't need to be connected to the internet to determine DRM, and played for the life of the disc.

This is unlike digital copies (especially DRM and internet connected rights management) which has MUCH tighter control which will only leave the studios more profit.

Think about it this way too, with physical disc the studios have to invest in all new equipment to produce and distribute a new format. IE DVD to Bluray. If a film is already recorded and mastered in 4K to offer an SD, HD, HDX, 3D, 2K, 2K 3D, 4K, 4K 3D version they more or less simply need to select a new output format and make it available on their servers. The consumers need to by new hardware and a new copy of the movie. The studios have limited cost in producing a new version.

Likewise in the digital realm there will be less discounting since with physical disc you might find a retailer discounting (even at a loss) to move product and make space. With digital the retailer have no reason since there is no physical costs and if the studio doesn't release DRM to a user until after the retailer pays there is less reason for a retailer to loose money. Especially if the studio takes the largest profit on the product.

And with a physical disc there so so much costs to get it to you. IE say it cost $14 to get a $16 movie in your hands. Then you would say expect to pay $16 for the next format. The Studios with digital it might cost $6 to get you that same $16 movie so why would they sell the next format to you for $8 (and made the same profit) when they could still sell it to you for $16 and make $10 (or more than double) the profit. Consumers still perceive the value to see it as $16.

                      Sigh !

Would love to see it, but I can see MANY reasons it's just not feasible.

                      Food for thought.

Also, it appears that the Sony online store allows upgrades to movie codes redeemed for SD copies of the movie. I was given a code for Looper in SD and for $5 extra I have the option to upgrade it to HD!

Now this is a feature I've been drooling for since I first signed up for Vudu.

                            YES! YES! YES!

Please consider the ability to purchase an upgrade from SD to HDX.

And while I am taking a trip to "Fantasy Island" please work out a deal with Disney to get them to join UV. GRIN!

I would probably upgrade most of the movies I've bought on Vudu. (There are a couple of children's movies that my daughter doesn't watch any more.)
