    Why so few 7.1 movies?

VUDU announces improved audio and then has limited selection. Any plans to increase the content vs. having this have to be in a "Collection"?

Re: Why so few 7.1 movies?

Interestingly, I rented a newer movie last weekend (End of Watch) and my AV receiver showed that the sound was in Dolby Digital Plus. So, even if a movie is not listed in the 7.1 Collections area, you may be able to find movies with that audio. Just wanted to let the forum know.

Be aware, however, that the info for the movie may show 5.1 audio as it does for this movie. VUDU should correctly state the audio output when listing.

I only have 5 speakers and a woofer. What will happen to the 2 extra channels from 7.1 when I only have 5.1?

Do they just NOT get heard?

Either that or it's automatically downmatrixed to 5.1.

In my opinion, Dolby 7.1 isn't necessary. it's really just a gimmick to try to get people to buy more equipment. I don't know many people that have room for, or even want that many speakers! 5.1 should be the standard. It's not worth the added expense! It will fade away, just like 3D!

This thread is about what VUDU offers (and properly lists). It's not about whether 7.1 is necessary. Does VUDU read these threads and if so, can they correct their listings to show what movies are in 7.1? Those of us with 7.1 equipment would likely rent MORE from VUDU than other sources if so.

Which movies are listed incorrectly? My apologies, i'll make sure to get them corrected on anything you list.

End of Watch is listed as 5.1 DD+

Hey Dan. Thanks for responding on behalf of VUDU. The movie that I rented was End of Watch. I saw my DD+ light up on my AVR and saw the 7.1 speaker indicator. I may have mistakenly thought the info said 5.1.

Can you confirm that VUDU is actively listing new releases in the audio format that is available? If so, why have a small group of movies in your Collections area that suggest these are all the 7.1 offerings?

                  Cheers,
                  Paul

The collection should automatically show all 7.1 titles that we have available. This is for mere convenience since we do not have a search filter for this in browse. If this is not the case we have a bug.

                      Hello PM,

You can find the movies that support 7.1 at this link:

                      http://www.vudu.com/movies/#featured...lby-Digital-71

End of Watch is only listed as 5.1 DD plus. I'll confirm this to make sure it's listed correctly. The movie info page should be up-to-date on the audio formats available to each quality.

Thanks Dan. If End of Watch is truly 7.1 (and possibly other movies), it would be great to have this all corrected and a filter to find these easily. I recommend removing the Collections area if you have more movies in 7.1 but an easy way to filter and find these.

                        Cheers,
                        Paul

I still find it interesting the way this stuff comes up. For example when Pirates 4 was released on Vudu the 3D version was 7.1 which the 3D version was only 5.1. That's why I still buy / watch Blu-Ray half the time. I would prefer to just buy and stream Vudu as much as I can but it seems a sizable percentage of the movies get better "quality" versions on Blu-Ray. You would think that the Studios would prefer things like Vudu over Blu-Ray (or DVD) as the current streaming services are more "secure" compared to physical medium.

The above link is dead. Is there anyplace to find a current list of 7.1 titles on VUDU?

It appears that Vudu has removed the 7.1 Audio collection and replaced it with the Extras+ collection.

Since Vudu doesn't offer advanced search filters their appears to be no way search for 7.1 audio titles.

Vudu DOES still support 7.1 though as titles such as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides still states 7.1 audio when you bring up the title and go to "More Info" tab.

As I recall there wasn't that many 7.1 audio titles and Vudu had weird stream like the 2D version of Stranger Tides was in 7.1 while the 3D version was only in 5.1, while the 3D Blu-Ray was in 7.1.

                              Ehhh....
