On the verge- just a few questions...

Ok, so I sat the wife down to explain to her that we REALLY need a Vudu in addition to our ATV. After spending all day at work creating my case she simply said "look, you know you're not going to stop bugging me until you get this so just get it!" She is in what we shrinks call a state of "Learned Helplessness"! So having won the battle I just have a few questions-

    1) I tested my living room connection (wireless linksys g-router to an airport express acting as a bridge that currently feeds my directv hd dvr which has a pass through) by hooking my laptop up to my dvr passthrough and got about 9.5 mbps. Can anyone with a similar speed give me an idea of how long the wait will be for HDX movies?

    2) I have comcast with their silly usage caps. With a product like ATV you can kind of tell how much usage you are using. With the Vudu's P2P system does anyone have a sense of how much data is being passed OUT of my system? Actually now that I think about it is Upload even included in the cap? Hmmm, I'll have to check.

    3) I'll have to check the specs on mine (panasonic PZ50700U), but I know that some 1080p tv's can accept 1080p/24 and some 1080p/60. I'm assuming that HDX are 1080p/24? What would be the effect then if my tv is 1080p/60? Or vice versa.

Thanks- I can't wait to check out the HDX!

As long as you have at least 4mbps, the wait will be about the same. Roughly 2.5x the length of the movie.

The average VUDU box uses less than 10GB/month total upload and download. Even with a number of HDX rentals, you should be OK.

I just checked the manual for that display and it looks like it doesn't accept 1080p/24, just 1080p/60. All of our HD content is native 1080p24. Going into your TV, you'd use 1080i, which the TV would deinterlace to 1080p.

It should still look fantastic, though you may see (minimal) judder when panning left and right depending on the quality of the TV's pulldown. I suspect you'd be hard-pressed to notice a difference.

Thanks- I can't wait to check out the HDX!
I look forward to hearing your impressions.

The max download speed you can set the VUDU box is 4mb, so even though you have a higher speed than that, you can expect an HDX to take approx. 4hrs. My down speed is 1.5mb and it takes about 8Hrs. But the superior quality of HDX I don't mind at all.

If your TV doesn't support 1080/24p then the VUDU will use 1080i instead.

I don't know the answer to question #2, sorry......

My Panny does accept 24p but performs 3:2 pulldown, dont sweat the 1080i or the judder. Enjoy.

The file sizes for SD, HD, and HDX are roughly 2gb, 4gb, and 10gb respectively. The uploading that your VUDU box does is fairly non intrusive so it won't tax your network or use much of your 250gb limit at all so you can do the rough math to see how many movies you can watch before you get close to the cap.

Jon (NA9D) uses the slingbox with his Vudu. He's putting together a new IR command set that you can download. WARNING: You will need to get the IR receiver to make your Vudu work with your Slingbox.

How much bandwidth it uses to download is directly related to how much you watch. If I watch 10 HDX titles in a month, or even just 10 HD titles, I should be way past 10GB.

I took it as what the box does on its own time is less than 10gigs.

Kind of off subject, but as far as these bandwidth caps, are they upload + download must be less than 250 gb? Or just download?

I have cable modem service (not comcast, and I love it) and no caps that I know of, so Im just curious.

I think its total bandwidth for a period of time.

I think it was Shultzy who pointed out awhile back that for most DSL and Cable Modem services you can upgrade to another tier of service that eliminates the cap. So if it turns out your really into the VUDU movies and cap out there is probably a way out if you're willing to pay extra.

Ill avg 5-6 HDX movies per month, I then might add a few older titles if I get bored, now worries for me. Cox in my area does not currently have a cap.

The caps on evdo cards and HSI are such complete bu****it.

This is correct for the most part. If they offer business class service, those are typically cap-free so you can download as you please.

Another Slingbox user and I are putting together a command file for SlingPlayer that you can load into the Slingbox. So far it's working fairly well but we've got a couple keys we want to try changing around. I've done very little of the work (a few others have done a lot more). I'm hoping Sling eventually adds the command set into their systems by default. I provided the IR codes to them last spring.

We'll be posting an article on SlingCommunity with a link to it here once this is complete.
