    Dolby Atmos ? ? ?

I'm sure the mods aren't going to comment on this but if anyone else else please +1 / bump the thread to show interest.

Would be nice if Vudu added Dolby Atmos audio in addition to the 7.1 currently offered, on select Vudu titles.

There are a "few" Atmos titles on Blu-Ray now and it seems to be gaining steam.

Why would they add Dolby Atmos if they haven't even added Dolby True HD or DTS HD Master?

Can't comment on any details, of course... but this is a public press release:

Dolby True HD is lossless and is not meant for streaming. The bitrates are way too high, which would take away from video bandwidth. Dolby ATMOS is completely different technology - it's basically an extension to DD+ that allows real time positioning of audio information in 3D based on your specific speaker setup (including speakers in the ceiling, if you have them).

          Interesting, thanks for the information...

I think it's still way to early for Vudu to even be looking at that - consumers would need to upgrade their receivers and purchase new speakers to take advantage of it and it's not worth it for them to do so yet when there is all of 1 title out in it. Have to let to marketplace build more of a demand for it first...

Atmos I'd be thrilled if Vudu could get simple 5.1 from all the titles still sporting stereo encodes. Let's fix the simple issues before reaching for Atmos which 98% of the general population hasn't embraced yet.

So, you don't think that comment was just the *slightest* bit sarcastic/inflammatory? Oh well... anyway I agree with you about 5.1, there are a number of titles that were provided in the past with Dolby ProLogic when 5.1 should have been available, and they need to be re-sourced and re-encoded. It is an ongoing project to do so.

Content acquisition/encoding is a different area from platform software development. VUDU has usually been ahead of the curve on new technology - I'm sure people said the same thing several years ago about 1080p streaming, 3D, 7.1 audio, etc. And if anything, ATMOS support will help get more high quality multichannel audio support as well, since it's backwards-compatible, i.e. if it's ATMOS it's also DD+ 7.1.

                  Re: Dolby Atmos ? ? ?

Jake I think your reading my comments wrong. You have to be. My comment was not sarcastic at all. I'm stating that with all stereo titles that should be in surround sound (many actions films like The Matrix). It would be far better to work on getting the new encodes of the titles people have been asking for in 5.1 (7.1 would be even better) yet Vudu is thinking of Atmos which most people have never heard of or implemented in their system. Granted we are the minority so we've heard of it but the mass majority of people you'd ask about Atmos would look at you with quizzical looks.

There was nothing I mean nothing sarcastic or inflammatory about my post.

                    Re: Dolby Atmos ? ? ?

You can't ask a company whose product is rooted in technology to hold off on new technology. We'd be stuck with Dolby Pro Logic if technology never advanced, if we got that far. I can't even imagine, nor do I understand what is involved in reencoding every existing movie. It'd be nice if it could be done. But is it practical? Or even possible? I remember a time when people were colorizing old black and white movies. That didn't get very far. I say move forward, and let customers who want to catch up. At least Atmos is backwards compatible for 5.1/7.1 systems.

                      Re: Dolby Atmos ? ? ?

Jeff I understand the need to move forward but with a lot of titles they are still stuck in the past with just the Prologic encodes. My point was they should be putting more of an effort into getting Dolby Digital on these older titles that people have asked for before worrying about a format that the majority of people have never heard of. It's putting the cart before the horse. Let's make the foundation of Vudu perfect before reaching for the stars.

                        Re: Dolby Atmos ? ? ?

The problem with your theory is that when Vudu first started, by the same theory, they should've made sure all soundtracks were in stereo when some were mono, and then catch up all stereo tracks to Pro Logic, and then Dolby Digital, and so on. That makes it impossible to adopt new technology as soon as it arrives. Are encoding new or popular content in Atmos and reencoding old movies in DD mutually exclusive? Besides, encoding in Atmos means it's also encoded in DD 7.1.

                          Re: Dolby Atmos ? ? ?

Correct but there have only been a very small handful of titles released in Atmos. I think only ten titles have been released by the studios in Atmos it's not like the studios are going to suddenly say hey let's make all the movies 7.1 Atmos they won't were talking ten titles and that's it so far. Where as thee are hundreds and hundreds of titles out currently that only have a stereo encode but the studio has had the same titles already out in DVD and Bluray in 5.1 surround sound and all they need to do is just release that encode to Vudu for those titles which are already out there unlike Atmos where the studio would have to create a new encode for Atmos to be added.

My point is Vudu should be working on getting the proper audio encode (which already exists) for those titles in stereo that were sent to Vudu instead of worrying just yet about Atmos which most people (including those here) don't have.

I agree, I have had an existing case with Vudu for about a year or more with 20 or so movies that are still in Dolby stereo that should be 5.1 or the HD copy is 5.1 and the HDX copy is stereo. Makes a lot of sense, huh?

Customers seem to minimize what's required to fulfill their own wishes. I bet your jaw would drop if you had a full understanding of what would be required by all involved to grant your request of, "all they need to do is just release that encode." Effortless on a customer's part, of course, to wish. But customers really don't know the inner workings of what it takes to make Vudu happen at all, and what it takes to grant requests like that.

My original point here was that maybe if they do reencode old movies, they'll reencode old movies in Atmos. That would still help you. I fail to see how reencoding old movies in 5.1/7.1 is a substitute for releasing new movies in Atmos. It's not an either/or the way I see it.

I do agree with you, however. I think Forrest Gump is only Pro Logic. I think I have a few titles that are 2.0 that my stereo prefers to remix. I'm sure if it was worth Vudu's time, they'd do it.
