    Weird Science (1985) 4K & Extended

Disc is dropping with both 4K and Extended Cut of the CLASSIC 80’s.

Let’s see if we can get both as neither are on Vudu.

If extended cut was dropped on psychical in the past I’ve never seen it.

The disc set is from Arrow without any digital codes so I’m guessing it’s unlikely we’ve see it on streaming. Have to try though.

Universal's track record on this is very poor, especially when they have licensed a movie out to another distributor, in this case Arrow, although the studio does have a habit to then offer 4K codes thru their Universal Rewards program, even though NO ONE has the movie available digitally in 4K.

This happened to me recently with "12 Monkeys," where their rewards program gave me a 4K Movies Anywhere code, which redeemed as 4K, but got the "This title is not currently supported in 4k" error on the Movies Anywhere app, while Vudu, Prime Video, and Apple TV only gave me the movie in HD. I currently have a ticket open on that title and a few others ("Big Miracle" and "Captain Underpants") with the studio.

I had that same problem with Blues Brothers 4K also a Uni production. Not sure I can play in 4K now or not haven’t checked.

The arrow packaging and information provided to retailers didn’t mention any digital codes.

Arrow does not provide digital codes for most titles licensed to them by major studios.

Purchased Weird Science recently on Vudu, looks like it did when I last watched it...on VHS! If Vudu obtains a higher resolution/better soundtrack of a film I have purchased will I get access to it? Side note I love Arrow's obscure 4K restored film offerings! An American Werewolf in London could have gotten better treatment though...super grainy and dark..

Film grain isn’t the easiest thing to get rid of. It’s there on the original film. You can remove it but you’re also doing to add more digital side effects. Grain is also much more visible in dark scenes like pretty much most of American Warewolf. You would likely have lost a lot of dark contrast detail trying to take out the grain.

Unfortunately no, when a print gets upgraded to 4K you have to repurchase it.

Roger that, makes sense jeremymc7. Bummer regarding Weird Science, while I still enjoyed reminiscing I was looking forward to a higher quality experience.

I’ve noticed lately that I’m seeing a lot of full length films from the 80’s that people are upscaling with AI and uploading to YouTube. Really weird.
