    Thank you!!
Mine sounds noticeably better when comparing the same material on iTunes and it's even a higher bitrate. I would definitely check what signal your receiver shows...

Apple TV streams have DD+, DD, and AAC audio available - the one selected is based on your Apple TV and TV/receiver settings & capability (the VUDU app doesn't directly control it).

          Jake,

What about video quality? I assume there's no way to change between video resolutions?

I ask because To Catch a Thief is showing it's correct aspect ratio, but on Vudu the only version you have in it's correct aspect ratio is the SD one, so I suspect I am seeing the SD stream instead of HDX but have no way to check...

I don't know enough about the app-level details to answer exactly what it does/shows, but note that not all titles have HLS HDX versions yet, it's likely that title is currently SD only.

For all you Apple Fans out there thanking Vudu for getting on Apple TV, Vudu has always tried to be part of their ecosystem. It's Apple that puts the barriers in place...

Okay, I have had a chance to play with the settings a bit this evening and I think there may still be a problem (but fixable).

                    First, here is my setup:

Receiver - Yamaha RX-V673 | Audio - Set to straight (so it will use whatever signal is sent without processing)
                    Apple TV 4 (16GB)
                    BenQ W1070 (should not matter)

If I have the 'Surround Sound' on the Apple TV (from the settings menu) set to 'Best Quality Available', it sounds like a tin can. I don't have this problem with any other apps on the system. It shows to be streaming PCM audio, but it does not sound like it is processing as surround sound.

If I go in to the settings menu on the Apple TV and set the 'Surround Sound' setting to Dolby Digital 5.1, everything sounds great. It shows the audio stream as Dolby Digital 5.1 as expected.

It's not a big deal, but I definitely want to leave the audio to Best Available and not have to select Dolby Digital specifically. So consider this a bug report / enhancement request.

Again, great work and thank you so much to everyone at Vudu for making this app happen! You have made me a happy camper today and it just reaffirms my decision to stick with you guys for my digital video needs.

Re: Vudu for Apple TV Coming August 22Coming August 22!

AFAIK the app does not select the audio, the Apple TV system player receives a manifest (m3u8) listing the available audio formats and selects the "best" one based on system settings and what the receiver/TV reports that it supports over HDMI.

We can take a look to see if there is any way to influence what its doing, but it may be an Apple firmware issue. Apple hasn't had the best track record on audio support on the ATV4...

Jake, I can confirm that the audio does not sound right in my system either. I have a high-end Yamaha surround sound system. When I compared the sound for Mad Max Fury Road on my ATV4 app and Tivo app, the Tivo app was much better and sounds like it is supposed to.

I also couldn't get the Search function to work on the ATV4 app.

                            Jake,

Over at MacRumors there's a thread going with people having the same observation. Instead of making you wade through it I'll paste 3 relevant posts...

                            #1

I'm not sure if vudu on atv4 is using Dolby Digital Plus. I have force awakens on both iTunes and Vudu. No way to really know what codec is being used since atv4 decodes everything to lcpm but when I play iTunes versions I get 7.1 channels which has to be DD+. On Vudu app I get only 5.1 channels so that could be just basic DD but hard to know. I have a pretty capable sound system with a Denon x4300h, Klipsch reference premier speakers and dual SVS subs in a 5.2.4 setup. Any one get 7.1 channels out of Vudu app on movies proving it's DD+?

Update: I can confirm that those movies using Vudu on my TiVo are bitstreamed in DD+ 7.1 so I don't think ATV4 Vudu app supports DD+

                            #2

I installed this vudu app on atv4 and launched the Atmos amaze trailer clip they have there and set my volume at -15db. Sounded kind of weak. The receiver was only displaying DD so I launched my Oppo vudu app and tried the same clip at the same volume. It sounded way louder, and crisper too. My receiver also showed Atmos/DD+.

                            #3

Finding the same. Vudu app is only passing 3/2/0.1 on my system whereas iTunes passes 3/4/0.1.

Very exciting to have Vudu on ATV!

I also had poor audio watching LotR Two Towers as other users have noted. On the same system I did not have the problem watching Star Trek Nemesis in the free section. Nemesis sounded pretty darn good and close to watch native ATV movies output.

Video looked fantastic on my 55" TV though a little more grainy on my 100+" projector where it looked good just not quite as good as native ATV.

The app's layout is fantastic. I am extremely pleased to have this and one less reason to fire up the Xbox as my ATV dominates my viewing devices as my go to player for: DirectTVNow, Netflix, HBO, and now Vudu.
