How many VUDU users are there?

Just curious, how many VUDU users are there?

Re: How many VUDU users are there?

Hard to say for sure. This guy says 3, and this guy says 1 billion. I'm guessing it's somewhere in between those 2 numbers, and nobody at Vudu is willing to spill the beans (private company blah blah blah....)

Nexfilx says that they have more than 1 Million Xbox user that have "activated" their service, but it does not say how many streaming users it has gained through their partnerships.

There is still plenty of room for players like Vudu in this market, but they have to play their cards right to get a fair share. I believe that Vudu has couple of technology Aces in their pocket... hardware, simple RF remote, interface, picture quality, and P2P content delivery to name a few. Content is key, but it might not be the battle they want to fight. Some how they need to communicate clearly (advertise maybe) to potential users in this market the advantages the Vudu box has over its competitors.

Re: How many VUDU users are there?

I know that numbers like these can be very misleading. For example, I am sure that Amazon.com counts us as a Unbox user /w our TiVo but in reality we have paid for 1 rental and watched 2-3 others on offer for free. I find the image quality even on our SD tube TV to be poor so it would not even be an option for a larger display.

I am sure that VUDU is in the same boat...people buy a $99 box but may not rent many/any shows. I guess it would be interesting to see ARPU reported like mobile phone companies do.

Anyway, we have a VUDU in transit thanks to eBay and should be hooking it up early next week.

According to some recent press reports, Vudu has a huge lead in ARPU over its competitors. Look for the article link in the thread about Vudu opening up their software to other products.

Re: How many VUDU users are there?

Still too few. In my rural town no one seems to know it even exists.

Please keep in mind these simple facts, and i am quoting from memory off AVS. Recent surveys show:

                      1. 70% of 1080p TV owners believe they are watching "HD" while feeding their sets SD digital cable and DVDs.

                      2. The average HDTV set has a 42" diagonal.

                      2. 95% of HD TV owners do not have a dedicated receiver, with 30% using HTIBs, you know the kind with the non-HDMI or passthrough sound receiver and 30AWG wire puny speakers.

When factoring these in you realize why for so many Netflix, Graboid, or Amazon SD is great, while AppleTV 720P is "perfect".

Come to the AVS gang, where they are dealing with 24p 110-200" calibrated PJs, and Audyssey MultiEQ on separates, the way DTS-HD MA 7.1 should be experienced in its full glory.
But then how many drive stick shift 3 pedal cars, or roast their own coffee on burrs pulling ristrettos on rotary pump 59mm machines?

Bottom line, the Vudu box is as close you can come to perfection and great choice of movies without having to drag your 12-hour-shift-axx to the video store for Blu-Rays.

When uncompressed audio finally makes it to Vudu we will have it perfect.

Vudu is a great transition to FIOS IMHO, after that the 50Mbps speeds with the hundreds of channels will put them OOB. It will take decades for FIOS to reach rural America though. I am very lucky to get 6MB cable in my 3 stoplight town.

BTW got my Vudu box today and i am very impressed with the PQ, sound is not worse than Dish HD.

That 42" diameter TV would have about a 13" diagonal screen size...

Hey Bob, as for the sound on the Vudu - rent and watch an HDX movie. You'll definitely hear a difference.

I'm curious how you are computing that. If you have a circle with a 42" diameter that circumscribes a rectangle, the diagonal of that rectangle should be equivalent to the diameter of the circle. Are you looking at it a different way?

Also, according to the dictionary, the diameter of an object is just the length of line passing through the center of it:

                              http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/diameter

Main Entry: di?am?e?ter Pronunciation: \dī-ˈa-mə-tər\ Function: noun Etymology: Middle English diametre, from Middle French, from Latin diametros, from Greek, from dia- + metron measure — more at measure Date: 14th century 1 : a chord passing through the center of a figure or body 2 : the length of a straight line through the center of an object 3 : a unit of enlargement used with a number to indicate magnification by a lens or optical system <an object one millimeter wide magnified 40 diameters appears 40 millimeters wide>
                              — di?am?e?tral \-ˈa-mə-trəl\ adjective

So, it was correct even without involving circles.
