Warner to go Blu-Ray exclusive....a positive for Vudu?

Looks like Warner will go Blu exclusively as of May this year.

    http://www.timewarner.com/corp/newsr...700383,00.html

I think that this may actually be good for Vudu for several reasons:
    • the morass of the back and forth over HDM may finally wind down with Blu-Ray becoming the physical media standard. This will simulataneously have the effect of one less "player" in the market AND futher opening the way for alternatives to traditional DVDs including IP based options such as Vudu
    • One less "release" for HD content, giving current players more opportunity
I will be glad to see one winner in the physical HDM market. I have always thought of Vudu as a supplement for my HDM collection and not a competitor, so I don't see this as bad news.

    Time will tell..

Well, I certainly see it as bad news for HD-DVD.

But part of a selling point for Vudu is that it avoids the format war. Well, OK, it will if they add more HD content. So if the format war is ended, I think that's not as positive for Vudu but I don't think it will make that much difference.

Sony may have actually done something right for a change...

Its only bad news for those of us who were supporting HD-DVD, like myself, who own HD-DVD players and movies. As for Vudu...I don't think this annoucement will affect Vudu in the end, as studios know eventually they will have to support HD through VOD as more and more companies enter the market, and as more companies put pressure on them to open up the HD VOD market, but thats just my opinion.

The HD-DVD camp is still large...In terms of major studios in North America, HD DVD is currently exclusively backed by Universal Studios (including subsidiaries Focus Features and Rogue Pictures), Paramount Pictures (including Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies, MTV Films, DreamWorks Pictures and DreamWorks Animation), and The Weinstein Company (including Dimension Films).

Seems to me that these competing camps of "exclusivity" point towards mutually assured destruction, as some outside factor (like the Vudu) is going to rise above this to ultimately win.

I have read a ton of responses from both the blu and red camp on various forums. It looks like some of the HD-DVD people are looking at a "salted earth" option rather than going blu and Vudu has been mentioned several times as an alternative.

There won't be a large influx of HDM refugees but it does point to an awareness of the Vudu product and a legitimacy as an format for HT hardcore enthusiasts.

Well it looks like Paramount just put the nail in the coffin...

TOKYO, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Paramount studios is poised to drop its support of the high-definition DVD (HD DVD) format after Warner Bros studio said it would back the competing Blu-ray format, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

They are both solid standard from a video perspective. But HD-DVD introduced interactive and finalized it. Where BD is still in draft form.

HD-DVD had one advantage and that is that manufacturing was compatible with the current DVD standard. BD requires new equipment.

This will become a nit since the studios are now jumping off the HD-DVD platform.

I wouldn't think that HD-DVD fanatics would hate BRD so much, they'd not jump ship if theirs tanks. Picture and, especially, audio quality of Vudu HD content isn't a replacement for high-def media, at least not for a typical early adopter.
