HD Versus SD by Studio Observation

I have seen a lot of people in the forums ask why certain Ultraviolet movies show up in standard definition (SD-480p) versus others showing up in high definition (HD-720p to HDX-1080p) on their VUDU accounts. As of now (5-7-12) Ultraviolet movies that are packed in with Blu-ray purchases show up in SD on VUDU and Flixster when redeemed from Universal or Warner and show up in HDX on VUDU and SD on Flixster when redeemed from Paramount or Sony (although someone mentioned Monty Python was in SD). If you purchase a DVD from Paramount it will give you an SD copy from what I understand. Paramount and Warner are the only studios that appear to state what resolution your Ultraviolet movies are in on the packaging of the movie. I can't seem to find it on any Sony or Universal titles which is unacceptable as we should know what we are paying for. For myself and many others the SD VUDU copies Universal and Warner give us are next to worthless on large displays and are only useful for mobile. In the case of Warner it is better to get the single disc Blu-ray and take it to Walmart for the $2 Disc to Digital conversion to get an HDX version than to pay the extra $5 for the combo pack, unless you really want the DVD and any extra special features. With Universal they don't appear to sell new Blu-ray titles not in the combo packs but you could still take the Blu-ray to Walmart and get the HDX version for $2. Hopefully Warner and Universal will get a clue and start giving the HD versions with new Blu-ray purchases. I hope this information is helpful.

Thanks. I have not redeemed any UV titles yet because I only want the UV Vudu HDX version and no SD versions of UV.

Curious as to how you redeemed the Dark Knight through Flixster? Was it from a packaged copy or some other promotion?

Well I got Batman Begins on flixster when I brought in my hd dvd version to Wal Mart for disc to digital. I think in the next month or so all the batman movies will be reissued by warner bros with dvd/uv digital copy since there is a new batman movie coming out this Summer. I also got all the Harry Potter movies on UV dc on flixster since they are releaseing a ultimate box set with uv copies in the next few months.

A cautionary note about holding on to digital copy codes. Most all have an expiration date assigned to them.

especially universal and warner brothers. I know several not that old movies like paul, little fockers and a few others completely stop working. Several other movies go beyond their expiration dates like Iron man 2 that expired in 2010 can still be redeemed. So always check even if there is an expiration date you may be suprised it still works. I really don't understand why there is an expiration date but that's there call.

I am not sure about Universal but the last two Blu-rays I purchased from Warner Bros. and redeemed at the provided URL with code ended up in my VUDU in HDX. The Blu-rays were newer titles Sherlock Holmes - Game of Shadows and Wrath of the Titans.

Interesting. I had the same experience with Sherlock Holmes (registered it on Flixster) and got it in HDX but I registered Wrath of the Titans on Vudu and it came in SD. Maybe I should have registered it on Flixster??? Did you get the single or combo pack of Wrath? Where did you buy it?

I got Vudu HDX for Sherlock Holmes - Game of Shadows from Flixster also.

Question - can the Flixster code have been redeemed on Vudu here:

You can redeem the Flixster codes on Vudu as of recently but I think the movie has to be listed under the redeem section.

I redeemed my Wrath of the Titans 3D blu ray through Vudu today and it was SD. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why some Warner titles come out HDX and some come out SD. It seems to be luck of the draw unfortunately.
