Well I just checked the other websites, Amazon, CinemaNow and M-Go and on all of those sites Disney movies can still be purchased. So it must be something just on VUDU then. Maybe it's just a database issue .... you know a mistake and they are changing all their titles to be UV and they will be reasonably priced ... stop laughing it could happen!

...I almost wonder if this now has not degraded into an all out format war.

Hopefully not and it is just a temporary circumstance during a contract re-negotiation or some such.

I don't see why Disney would offer DigitalCopy+ on VUDU if there was a format war brewing. If there were even a hint of that, they never would have offered VUDU at all. I realize they are allowed to change their minds. I see one of two things happening here:

              1) Now that Disney has offered DigitalCopy+ they want to force you to buy their physical media and thus will slowly be phasing out EST one by one.

              2) Disney allowed it's VUDU contract to expire (much like cable companies allowing their channel contracts to expire and the channel ends up off the air until an agreement is reached.) If this is the case, they could be working on new EST pricing and compensation rights, and once an agreement is reached everything will be back to normal.

It's also possible Disney just likes to rile us all up and get us talking about them more

Re: VUDU So why are DISNEY and TOUCHSTONE Movies Rental ONLY now?

I guess anyone of those three...
                1. Disney Studios taking away EST from Vudu (and only Vudu) to drive packaged media sales
                2. Contract Negotiations between Vudu and Disney Studios in-progress
                3. Disney Studios doing a media dive of some kind

                ...could be the reason.

This has to be the third most dramatic change to the Vudu service only behind the WalMart purchase and the advent of Ultraviolet.

For some unknown reason currently left to speculation, Walt Disney Studios has dropped Vudu as an EST partner.

Alternatively, Vudu has dropped Walt Disney Studios as a source for EST content.

Currently, we do not know which is the case.

The Walt Disney Studios library of content is currently limited to iVoD sales only for reasons we are left to speculate on.

This is a very dramatic change.

This change comes on the heels of only a few weeks from Walt Disney Studios announcing Vudu as a Digital Copy partner to their DigitalCopy+ initiative.

It just does not add up...

You'd think maybe a VUDU rep would pop in and say something to end our speculating and worse case scenario's Thiis turn of events is really bugging me.

one thing to add to the speculation.

Perhaps the internal Digital Copy redemption numbers are in with Oz and Walt Disney Home Entertainment executives have data to make a decision on DECE membership, assuming Vudu redemption numbers were a shock to them.

If so, it is possible what we are seeing is the shift in the Vudu catalog prior to Disney embracing DECE membership.

A bunch of MGM titles were removed as well such as Back to School and Silence of the Lambs. Both were able to be purchased previously, but now the titles are not available at all. Interesting....
