    should i worry?

i'm rather new to this digital library stuff. I read some people on the forum "lost" all of their movies on a technical glitch. Is this TRUE?

is it POSSIBLE to lose all the movies in a library??

the reason i ask is because i have over 400 movies and was thinking of selling the ACTUAL copy as i do a disc-to-digital copy in my vudu.

is this SAFE to do? what happens if i DO lose all my movies? do i have to start OVER?

or is it possible that in my ultraviolet and disney movies anywhere account they will still be SAFE?

just concerned about how SAFE my vudu library is?

    please advise..thanks for your time

    Re: should i worry?

I have no intention of selling my physical media, at least my Blu Ray discs. The discs are a better quality then you'll get by streaming. I'll never get around to selling my DVDs either.

I've never lost any of my VOD movies.

It's all a matter of probabilities. I've lost access to music I've purchased from Walmart, Microsoft and MTV because they decided to close their music service one day, and that stuff is just gone. So I'm pretty aware that it's a possibility. Those are not small brands.

But Vudu seems solid and stable. Failing that, most of my content is UV, making it available in other systems. I take comfort in the fact that the content rights holders themselves are behind UV so that improves the odds of a long life.

Personally, I keep the physical copies of movies I'd be really bummed to lose, or ones whose special features I want access to. Also, according the Terms of Service, Vudu has the right to remove a D2D title from your account if you no longer own the physical copy - not that I've ever heard of that happening.

I did not know that. It makes sense, though.

thats good to know..did not know about that not being allowed to sell your actual media..just a question then..whats the POINT of VUDU-To-GO if you only use it on your TV?

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Without a doubt, digital streaming/downloads is the way media delivery is going to go from here on out. Yes, some programs have folded, but the overall trend has been, and will continue to be, towards cloud storage. UV is designed to protect against one retailer going under and you losing access to everything you bought from them. There are still a lot of kinks to work out, but I fully believe that UV rights will be a pretty safe bet going forward.

UV has actually saved some people's movies. Redbox recently announced that people who bought movies through their defunct Digital Service will get their movies transferred over to M-GO at no charge. I never used Redbox since it was not UV at the time it was around but those who did will get to keep their movies which is nice.

                    Re: should i worry?

I think technically we are licensing a digital COPY when we do D2D and that license is only valid when there is an original physical to begin with. So just in case I am keeping everything. My Blu-Rays got to stay in the house, the DVDs have all gone to a bin in the ceiling of my garage. Copies of Vudu email receipts all get archived in a folder on my PC.

But to play devil's advocate how would any service know whether you still had the physical copy?

Same for me. Getting to be a lot of boxes in the storage space. I keep Blurays in the house.

                            Re: should i worry?

If Vudu or UV itself were to close they should have to give us a way to download our titles we "own" in a format that can be viewed without special software!

I have over 3000 titles and not all of them are UV.

Here's another way to look at this topic: what are you all doing with your laser disc, VHS, LP, and 8 track collections? Not to mention other formats that have died out. I know I have a few titles that I've bought that I'll never play again, either due to defunct media, or technology improvements. You can't get Dolby Digital from a VHS.

In the case of the digital titles, I'd feel more put out about paying full price to own a title and losing it, compared to paying just a couple bucks to getting a title converted, or even getting a free code with a physical title. I see the latter as "Enjoy it while you can."
