To me the biggest reason to use HDMI is that I use ONE cable for audio and video. It helps simplify things tremendously...

The same here. I have around 20 devices that use HDMI. I couldn't imagine going back to using component and optical cables for everything.

I recently pulled out all my analog cables that had been sitting there for the last few years unused. It was a huge pile of cables, plus I spent a ton of money on them. HDMI cables are very inexpensive(as long as you get them from the right place) and you still get a superb picture.

Is there any way to have this topic re-raised ? I am now in a bad situation where my hdmi port on my Vizio died so I have to use component and the 480p looks very .. VCR like.

My Apple TV, Tivo HD, DirecTV, Xbox and PS3

ALL allow me to download hd content and play it in HD over component. This isn't just an "Apple TV is breaking the rules" every other content provider out there can do it, why can't we ?

          Please see:

          http://www.cepro.com/article/vudu_pl..._recovery/K316

It alludes to the fact that the new features may only initially be on the XL box but perhaps if customers keep requesting, it can come to the normal box as well.

I don't think they quite said which features are going to be XL-only. But maybe if enough people raise this point, THIS feature won't be XL exclusive.

They did not. I agree. Since we are talking about HD over component, people that want HD over component need to contact Vudu and let them know that they want it on their X100 boxes. I personally don't need it as I find HDMI more convenient. But if you are one of those who want it - by all means contact them. Deluge them! Make sure that it won't become an XL exclusive feature.

I would do this with any proposed feature that is found out there that you want on your box!

It was brought up a couple of times on the previous page. But with VUDU confirming future HD over component capability, I don't think anyone will go for HDF2 yet. We're just trying to get VUDU's ear and let them know that we'd like this feature to be available on both models (250GB one and 1TB one).

Wow. I was all excited to watch some HD content... only to be VERY disappointed to find out i can only watch it in 480p! I looked over the box everywhere to see where I might have missed such a such an arbitrary limitation. Not a hint that the device/service would be so discriminatory against early adopters just because my projector doesn't have HDMI. And from what I can tell, at least a dozen other content providers don't place this limitation on their devices. Its too bad, as the person amongst my peers with the knack for technology(aka nerd), i wouldn't be able to recommend this device to anyone. Back to recommending Apple TV's! Back goes a Vudu to BestBuy...

Make sure they DO make this feature an "XL ONLY" thing.
You get what you pay for. The average Joe is going to use inferior HDMI for ease of connection to a single plasma or lcd.

Only installers and pro-av should have the ability to distribute video across component vidoe and hdmi simultaneously, etc.

                        Porsche can sell you a Boxter, a 911 or a 911 turbo.
If you want the power of a 911 turbo for the cost of a 911....buy the 911 turbo. don't expect to be able to buy a boxter and flip a few switches under the dash and magically end up with a 911 turbo.

Sorry...just trying to make another analogy to get the pt across.

How can you argue that HDMI is inferior? With the exception of the fact that it uses HDCP, HDMI is a superior connection as it allows the system to be 100% digital. Using Component you have to convert to analog and then back to digital again at the TV.

So how can you argue that a digital -> digital system is inferior to a digital -> analog -> digital system?

I also know plenty of Joe Plumbers who would love to hook up their Vudu to their older HD set that has component only or they have too many HDMI devices in place already.

And why should installers and pro-av be the only ones who can distribute video across HDMI and component simultaneously? And why would you use HDMI since you've argued it's "inferior"?

I understand you like that competitive edge that HD over component gives you. It adds a competitive edge to the product that you'd otherwise not have and I can see why you don't want external storage either. If Vudu had HD over component on all boxes and external storage, there'd be no need to purchase the XL. I understand Vudu's desire to sell a higher end product but I disagree with this decision on video outputs. A high end product should be one that has a better processor chip in it or other hardware features not in the lower end box. It should not just be a bigger hard drive and software enabled features. But that was Vudu's choice to do it that way.

I think your post sounds rather condescending.

Only advantage I know that comp has is that many tv's are limited on HDMI and it gives you options. I'll take A/V over one HDMI cable any day.

Boy was it inferior watching BR's and getting HD audio over ONE cable

Right. But that doesn't mean HDMI is inferior - it just gives you options.

It's impossible for an all digital system that is effectively "lossless" to provide an inferior picture to an analog system. Now, component may be more flexible in some respects and it does not have HDCP on it but that doesn't make it any more superior.

                                I agree completely.

During my most recent rcvr purchase, my stipulation was pass thru 1080p HDMI switching. When I bought my tv, it had 3 HDMI inputs which was also preferred.

I like sending all AV over HDMI to my Onkyo, then running one cable to the TV. Why in the heck would you want extra crap running everywhere.
