How can you tell if 1080p/24 is supported?

    Hey gang,

A co-worker is looking to get a new 50" Panasonic plasma (TH-50PZ700U) and we are wondering how you can tell if the TV supports 1080p/24. The specs on the TV and in the store just say 1080p.

Is there some other spec I should look for?

According to CNET it does NOT support 1080P/24. They reviewed the 42 inch version of the same TV and say that other than the size the TV's are identical.

You could bring your Vudu to the store and try it.

So, I again ask: In general, how do you know if 1080p/24 is supported?

Best sources are AVS Forum and CNET reviews. I don't think that there is a generic way to "know" for sure. CNET uses sources that try to connect to the TV in 1080P/24 format and report the outcome.
So may be bringing your VUDU box to the store really is the best option.

When you say "spec" (the one you've looked at) do you mean specs that vendors/websites will advertise?
I usually try to find the actual manual for the device - usually online - from the manufacturer site, and they usually have a section towards the end with a lot of tech stuff (for instance, sync frequencies, etc...). Maybe you'll find it there (if this isn't what you already looked at).

Is the vertical frequency the same as the frame rate? Because the manual does list the modes and frequencies...

No, it is not. Vertical Frequency is measured in kHz, and Frame Rate is measured in fps.

I know the units things are in. Except vertical frequency is in Hz not kHz (horizontal frequency is in kHz). However, 1 Hz = 1 cycle per second. So 1 frame per second is equal to 1 Hz. Therefore 60 fps is kinda like 60 Hz. In each case we are talking "something" per second. My question was more to the question of if they are directly related - meaning: Will a 1080p/24 monitor operate with a vertical frequency of 24 KHz. Because the vertical frequencies listed for 480p, 720p, 1080i, etc. are all 60 Hz or thereabout.

Look for multiples of 24 Hz... do you see any?
If not, you could look at other frequencies: there are tricks that TVs can play to show X fps with a Y refresh frequency (with X < Y), by showing the same frame for more than one refresh period. Usually you can tell the trick is active in scenes that involve camera "travelling" as it is not smooth anymore. I don't know if I would call these "true 24 fps" displays though.
Then again, I'm no video expert.

BTW, I think there is an explanation of the "trick" here: http://www.zerocut.com/tech/pulldown.html

Here are the modes. It didn't quite copy right but the horizontal frequency in kHz is the first number after the display modes and then the vertical fequency in Hz is the second...

Thanks for asking the question again because I posed the same question in "The Perfect Home Theater" and did not get any answers. Maybe I did not pose it as a question.

                            Maybe you did!

I think it's hard to tell, but it seems to me that the TV manual is the best place to look.

Thinking about it, 1080p/24 really is true "full HD." It's the same frame rate as the movie was filmed in originally. 1080p/60 is really not much different from 1080i/30. Instead of two sets of images at 30 frames a second, it's one set at 60 frames a second. That's the "easy" way to do it. Going to 24 frames is a lot different.

I just purchased my Vudu and learned that my Sony KDL-40XBR2 is 1080p/60 capable, not 1080p/24. From my online reading, looks like 1080p/60 is much more common than 1080p/24. Any chance of Vudu adding 1080p/60 capability?

Given my Sony's native mode is 1080p, the Vudu 1080i signal is being upscaled, correct? If so, am I really missing out on anything?
