I wish there was a feature for a new box to put it in update me now mode no matter what. I cant believe its going to take me 3 - 4 days before I have everything I need to watch all movies and TV shows. Plus another 3 - 4 hours for Bourne Supremacy to download.

I understand all the background trickle stuff for standard daily updates but there has got to be a better way for new boxes to get up and running quicker. I'm an instant gratification guy, thats why I bought the Vudu local and not direct from Vudu.

As stated elsewhere, not really. The box is designed to have minimal impact on your home network. It's hard to please everyone. You want to use your full download pipe right away to get the full database. Others don't want their network impacted.

I can't say much about this, but I think there are some improvements being looked at in this area that will help you get content faster. I can't promise anything or say more than this, but let's just say, Vudu understands you want your content as quickly as possible!

Remember, while people like us here on the forums would like to be able to set the "aggressiveness" of the updates with a finer granularity, VUDU also has to make this user-friendly for those who don't know or care about network usage and just want to plug-and-play, so the options can't be too complicated.

I agree that to make this work for the masses it should be as easy and unobtrusive as possible. That being said I still want that gas peddle option if needed.

I guess I could just kick my kids off limewire for awhile.

So, I've seen what happens on this forum when you have two vudu's, what happens when there are 5 or six different vendor's boxes on my network all competing for the .5mb/s upload bandwidth to serve content to other people. & why should my limited up bandwidth be used this way? Shouldn't I be able to completely control my network devices for the future?

Well, you can always unplug them.

Seriously, you can't download all you want, but not serve as a peer for anyone else, because then NO ONE would be able to download anything. The default is for the Vudu to serve as a peer to share (licensed) content at a rate that shouldn't interfere with normal network use.

If you read the rest of this thread, you'll see that you can limit the bandwidth, and if you were to hook up 5 or 6 Vudus on the same LAN, you should make sure you have a decent pipe. Besides, they probably won't all be peering at the same time. If they are, you can always give your computer priority over the Vudu(s) in the advanced setup of any good router. That should not even be necessary for most people, but if you are worried about your latency in an online game, for example, you do have that option.

If you want to control bandwidth for each device or protocol you need to have a router that has robust QOS rules. Not every vendor's application or box will play well and some even assume that they can consume all your outbound bandwidth.

Just for my information what type of router are you using? Brand/Model.

For not having restrictions, it still takes an incredibly long time! I'm on the initial load/activation part where it's updating the content and telling me not to unplug things. But it appears to be only 10%'ish along (kinda hard to know specifically) or just what it's doing! And it's been almost 24 hours now.

I have good bandwidth being on a nice Metro-Ethernet connection, and I also happen to have cooler toys on the networking front. Which means I can see all of the connections being made (the one to a Vudu registered IP) and six other simultaneous connections, presumably to peers given the client-ip-statuses of the IP addresses with different service providers.

What's interesting is that the non-Vudu IP connections don't seem to go over 1M at a time. And the connection to Vudu over 24 hours has only passed 4.3M of traffic. Which begs the question of what the heck are you transferring during the initial setup that is possibly taking so long anyway???

I'm hoping to get a better picture of what's going on, mostly because I don't feel like putting a sniffer on the port and sifting through it all... But also because I would like to begin playing with my new toy, and when something sits at the same screen for long periods of time without changing the status bar much, that causes one to wonder!

Peer-to-Peer Mode with Other Vudu boxes? Why? How do I benefit from that configuration/topology? My box is communicating directly with other boxes for the purpose of updating content? Did I understand that correctly?

Not sure why I just saw this today, six months after the fact, but yes. Boxes on the Vudu P2P network share files. When you request a movie, it might come from 5 or 10 different boxes just like if you downloaded a file via bit torrent on your computer. The advantage is that with a distributed architecture like this, the network requirements of Vudu to have expensive server farms is limited and it ends up being a more reliable backbone anyhow as lots of redundancy is built into the P2P network. in case one peer goes down, many more are able to support it as replacements.

Hey I have a customer who wants me to manage their network they have a server setup and about 25 nodes what server admin software would you use? what software is out there to make my job a lot easier? Everything from A/V to Diskeeping Software? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not really sure what this has to do with the Vudu boxes. It seems your question is rather outside both the scope of this thread and the scope of the Vudu forums. Is there something specific to the Vudu player that you want to know about? There is no software for the Vudu players. I would recommend looking on some other forums for answers about your other questions. For A/V software, I'm sure there are some software forums on AVSForum. For disk keeping, there's probably a number of other forums out there.

I wonder how the new streaming software affects this? I know my three BX100 boxes have the streaming software on it. And now I only use the original software, with downloading when I want to watch a title at my girlfriends(she only has a 768kbs DSL connection) or when I want to watch a title I previously purchased on VUDU before the streaming software was available.

SO since I'm running the streaming software, I'm assuming my three BX100 boxes are not uploading content with the P2P architecture.
